Major Threats Facing Migratory Fish Populations

Migratory fish species, known for their extensive journeys across rivers, lakes, and ponds, are currently grappling with a perfect storm of threats. Among the 30 flagship species identified for conservation are the golden mahseer and goonch catfish. These species have become symbols of the critical situation facing migratory fish worldwide. A comprehensive assessment conducted by an international team of scientists evaluated over 15,000 species of freshwater migratory fish, revealing a staggering decline of approximately 81% in their numbers over the past fifty years.

The Importance of Freshwater Fish

Dr. Zeb Hogan, co-author of the report and a professor of biology at the University of Nevada, Reno, emphasized the crucial role that freshwater fish play in supporting human livelihoods. "Freshwater fish support hundreds of millions of people around the world, so for humans, they're very important," he stated, underscoring their significance beyond mere sustenance.

Globally, migratory freshwater fish are a vital food source for around 200 million people. Dr. Hogan highlighted their astonishing diversity, showcasing species that can weigh over 650 pounds and travel more than 7,000 miles. He noted the beauty of species like the golden dorado and tropical eels, which undertake incredible migrations across vast oceans.

Historical Context and Recent Findings

The UN first addressed the status of migratory fish in 2011, assessing only 3,000 species at that time. Since then, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has gathered extensive data on various fish populations. The latest report marks a significant milestone, expanding the assessment to over 15,000 species, highlighting the urgent need for conservation measures.

From this assessment, researchers identified 325 fish species that should be included in a global agreement aimed at monitoring and supporting threatened migratory animals. This list features 30 priority fish species that require immediate attention, including several found in the UK such as Allis Shad, River Lamprey, Brook Lamprey, and Atlantic Salmon.

Cultural Significance and Conservation Challenges

Many of the threatened fish species hold cultural significance for communities around the world. For instance, the golden mahseer, often referred to as the tiger of the river, is deeply valued in the Himalayas for its cultural and spiritual importance, extending far beyond economic benefits. Michele Thieme, deputy lead for freshwater at the World Wildlife Fund US, noted that the golden mahseer is particularly threatened by overfishing and habitat loss.

"Habitat loss includes things like dams that fragment a river system, which results in fish not being able to connect to their spawning habitats," Thieme explained. This highlights the multifaceted challenges migratory fish face, especially in regions where river ecosystems are heavily disrupted.

The European Dilemma: Barriers to Migration

In Europe, migratory fish encounter barriers that severely limit their movement, with obstacles occurring on average every kilometre (0.6 miles). These barriers often consist of small culverts or weirs that serve little purpose and could be dismantled to restore natural pathways. Dr. Janina Gray, head of science at WildFish, pointed out that even seemingly minor barriers can have significant cumulative effects on migrating fish.

The energy reserves of fish become depleted as they struggle to navigate these obstacles, making them increasingly vulnerable to disease and predation. Poor spawning conditions exacerbate the challenges they face during migration.

The Need for International Collaboration

Many migratory fish species travel across national borders, necessitating coordinated efforts among governments to address these threats effectively. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species, a global UN treaty established in 1979, commits countries to collaborate in the protection of migrating species. The UN is now advocating for the inclusion of the 30 priority fish species in this treaty during its next annual meeting in three years.

The success of conservation efforts can be seen in the case of the Saiga antelope, a species that has benefitted from similar protective measures. This example illustrates the potential for positive outcomes when nations unite for wildlife conservation.

The findings presented in this report underscore the urgent need for action to protect migratory fish species.
