Severe weather alert: Tornadoes, blizzards, and record rainfall impact millions in the US. Are you prepared for the storm? Click to learn more.
GlipzoThe aftermath of this storm has already been felt in the Midwest, where nearly 3 feet of snow has fallen across states such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, and northern Michigan. The NWS has reported that the bulk of this severe weather is projected to move off the east coast into the Atlantic by Tuesday, leaving behind a trail of abnormally cold air.
The storm has also led to significant power outages, with over 406,000 customers without electricity—approximately one-third of these outages occurring in Michigan, followed by Virginia and North Carolina. In Minnesota, reports indicate that parts of the state have already received over 25 inches of snow by Monday morning, with additional snow and high winds expected. The NWS has warned that whiteout conditions could make travel extremely perilous, creating potentially life-threatening situations.
In anticipation of the storm's impact, schools across several districts in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Wisconsin, and Minnesota have temporarily closed. Furthermore, park officials in Washington D.C. announced early closures of major attractions, including the Washington Monument, as a precaution against the severe weather. The Park Police have issued warnings about possible flash flooding, strong winds, and dangerous lightning.
Meanwhile, the West Coast is preparing for an extreme heat wave. An extreme heat watch is anticipated later this week for parts of southern California, Arizona, and Nevada. In southwest Arizona, temperatures may soar to 109°F (42°C), raising concerns about heat-related illnesses. If Phoenix reaches over 100°F on Wednesday, it will mark the earliest such occurrence in nearly 40 years.
In stark contrast, Hawaii experienced record-breaking rainfall over the weekend, with nearly 24 inches recorded in Maui, shattering rainfall records that have stood since 1951. This extraordinary weather pattern is indicative of a potentially monumental weather event that could affect around 200 million people across various states.
As we look to the future, the focus should be on disaster preparedness and climate resilience. With the potential for more extreme weather events looming, communities must be equipped to handle the unpredictability of our changing climate. Stay informed, stay safe, and prepare for the unexpected as this winter storm unfolds.
