Delhi-NCR experiences thunderstorms bringing temporary relief from heat. What’s next for the city’s weather? Click to find out more!
GlipzoThe IMD issued a series of alerts throughout the afternoon, warning of thunderstorms, squally winds, and rainfall. Among the recorded gusts, Palam Airport registered the strongest wind speed at 70 km/h, followed closely by Pragati Maidan at 59 km/h and Pusa at 54 km/h. Other notable wind speeds included 38 km/h at Safdarjung, while Lodi Road and Mayur Vihar recorded 33 km/h.
This sudden storm activity contributed to a noticeable drop in temperatures. At Safdarjung, the maximum temperature peaked at 37.2 degrees Celsius, which is 3.2 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average. Palam recorded 36.6 degrees Celsius, falling 4.4 degrees Celsius below normal, while Ayanagar was slightly cooler at 35.5 degrees Celsius, marking a 6.6 degrees Celsius decrease from the norm. Gurgaon also felt the effects with a maximum temperature of 33.6 degrees Celsius, which is 4.4 degrees Celsius below average.
The air quality in the capital saw a significant improvement as well. By 4 PM on Saturday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) registered at 85, categorizing it as satisfactory. This was a notable drop from the previous day's AQI of 123, which fell under the moderate category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The IMD attributed this rainfall to a western disturbance, characterized by a cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh and an upper air circulation over central Pakistan. These weather patterns were complemented by troughs extending through regions such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
However, this reprieve is expected to be short-lived. The IMD's forecast indicates that while maximum temperatures are unlikely to change significantly in the next 48 hours, a gradual increase of 4-6 degrees Celsius is anticipated over the following five days. Additionally, minimum temperatures are likely to remain stable for the next day before also rising by 4-6 degrees Celsius in the subsequent days.
Residents should be prepared for fluctuations in temperature and air quality as we move into the coming weeks. Monitoring local forecasts and staying informed through reliable sources will be essential to manage health and comfort during these seasonal changes.
In summary, while Saturday's thunderstorms offered a refreshing change for the residents of Delhi-NCR, the forecast suggests that warmer conditions are on the horizon. Keeping an eye on the weather updates will be vital as the region navigates this transition.

A critical heatwave continues to impact northwest and central India, with relief expected after May 29. Stay informed for updates on this weather phenomenon.
