Pune residents can expect a temperature drop and thundershowers next week as Westerly winds bring moisture, offering relief from the recent heatwave.
GlipzoJust last week, Pune was in the midst of a heat wave, with temperatures soaring to record highs. On May 11, the city's main weather station at Shivajinagar recorded a staggering 41.4°C, marking the highest temperature for a May day since 2015. Two days later, the morning minimum temperature set another record at 27.4°C, making it one of the four hottest mornings recorded in May since 1969. According to weather experts, this year's early May heat has been unprecedented, hotter than any corresponding period since 2020.
On May 18, Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 40°C, which was 3.1°C above the normal range. In Lohegaon, the mercury peaked at 41.8°C, nearly 5°C higher than usual. Surprisingly, Pashan, typically one of the cooler areas, experienced a high of 40.3°C.
Dr. Kumar also mentioned the likelihood of severe weather conditions: "The IMD forecasts thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls over parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha. In Pune, we are expecting clouds in the afternoon and evening, with the potential for thunderstorms between May 22 and 24."
As Pune braces for the impending weather changes, residents should prepare for a mix of cooler temperatures and possible thunderstorms, which can bring both relief and challenges.
In conclusion, while the forecast of thundershowers brings a welcome change to Pune’s weather, it also serves as a reminder of the city’s evolving climate dynamics. The upcoming week will be a test of how residents adapt to these sudden changes, and staying informed will be key to navigating the weather challenges ahead.
