Bengaluru is on a three-day rainfall alert due to unusual weather patterns. Learn what factors are causing this surprising climate shift.
GlipzoBengaluru, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India, is under a three-day rainfall alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), lasting until March 21. This alert comes as the city grapples with unusual weather patterns, including rain and hail, that have persisted for three consecutive days.
Reports from The Indian Express indicate that on March 17 and 18, several regions in Bengaluru and surrounding areas of interior Karnataka experienced not just rain but also hailstorms—a rare phenomenon for March. Typically, the city has gone without any recorded hailstorms in March for nearly three decades, from 1991 to 2020.
The ongoing weather events are attributed to a unique atmospheric interaction involving two anti-cyclone systems over the region, coupled with notable temperature fluctuations. This combination has resulted in lower freezing heights in the atmosphere, thus heightening the chances of hail formation alongside rainfall.
While rainfall in Bengaluru during March is not entirely out of the ordinary, the occurrence of hailstorms is exceptional. Historically, the city averages only 0.1 days of hail in April and 0.4 days in May. On March 18–19, the city recorded 7 mm of rainfall, but the outskirts, particularly the Bengaluru international airport area, saw a significant 64.8 mm.
According to the IMD's weekly forecast, the city is expected to continue experiencing intermittent rainfall and cloudy skies until the end of the alert period on March 21. However, the meteorological department has not issued any official warnings as of now. The temperatures during this period are projected to fluctuate between 31 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius, with cloudy conditions expected to persist.
While Bengaluru is experiencing these unusual weather patterns, a strong western disturbance is affecting Himachal Pradesh, resulting in significant rainfall and snowfall across various regions. The Meteorological Centre in Shimla reported that Manali received the highest rainfall at 53 mm, while areas like Sarahan and Seobagh received 32.5 mm and 32.4 mm, respectively. In high-altitude regions, snowfall has been substantial, with Gondhla reporting 13 cm, Keylong receiving 12 cm, and Kukumseri getting 11.4 cm.
For March 19, an orange alert has been issued for heavy rainfall in districts such as Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, while heavy snowfall is anticipated in Lahaul and Spiti. Temperatures in these areas are currently reported to be 6-7 degrees Celsius below normal, which is expected to continue for the next few days.
Understanding these weather patterns is crucial, not just for immediate safety but also for long-term climate awareness. As urban areas like Bengaluru become more susceptible to extreme weather events, it raises questions about infrastructure resilience and climate adaptation strategies. The interplay of these anti-cyclone systems could signal shifts in weather patterns that affect agriculture, urban planning, and public health.
As Bengaluru continues to navigate this unexpected weather, residents and officials alike must remain vigilant. Given the ongoing patterns, it is essential to monitor updates from the IMD and prepare for any potential disruptions. Moving forward, the focus should be on understanding and mitigating the impacts of such weather phenomena, particularly as climate change continues to influence weather patterns globally.
With the potential for more rain and hail in the coming days, this situation serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of climate systems and their far-reaching effects on urban life. Stay tuned for further updates as Bengaluru braces for what could be a transformative weather week ahead.
