Currently, Rivian has yet to commence production of the R2 SUV, with manufacturing anticipated to begin by June. Compounding these hurdles, the company has not yet tested a self-driving system tailored for robotaxi applications. Furthermore, the production of the robotaxi will take place in Rivian’s Georgia factory, which is still under construction and not yet operational.
Despite these obstacles, RJ Scaringe, Rivian's founder and CEO, remains optimistic. At the company’s inaugural “Autonomy & AI Day” last December, he emphasized the importance of automated driving technology, hinting that it would enable Rivian to explore opportunities within the ride-sharing sector. Scaringe was instrumental in shifting Rivian's strategy in 2021 from a rules-based framework for driver assistance to an AI-first approach, leveraging large language models to enhance the vehicle's perception and navigation capabilities.
The culmination of Rivian’s innovative efforts is the Rivian Autonomy Platform, which made its debut in 2024 with the second-generation R1 vehicles. This platform is a significant part of Rivian's long-term vision, aiming to enhance vehicle capabilities progressively, from hands-free driving on highways to a comprehensive point-to-point navigation system expected to roll out later this year.
Rivian envisions a future where vehicles can operate with minimal human oversight. Scaringe expressed confidence in the rapid advancement of autonomous technology, stating, “If you were to look at the progress in autonomy in the last five years and try to use it as a rough metric or gauge to predict the next five years, you would be wildly wrong.” He believes that the pace of innovation is accelerating, indicating that past trends may not serve as reliable indicators of future developments.
Rivian is not Uber’s only partner in the robotaxi space. In 2022, Uber announced a collaboration with Lucid Motors and autonomous vehicle tech firm Nuro to create robotaxis based on Lucid's Gravity SUV. These vehicles are expected to launch commercially by the end of this year in San Francisco, showcasing Uber's proactive approach to securing partnerships with various electric vehicle manufacturers.
