A tragic fire claims the life of retired IAS officer Dhanendra Kumar just days before his 80th birthday, leaving his family and community in shock.
GlipzoThe excitement surrounding Dhanendra Kumar's upcoming 80th birthday was abruptly shattered when tragedy struck at his home in Hauz Khas, Delhi. Dhanendra, a revered retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, was preparing for celebrations planned at the Delhi Gymkhana Club on May 30 and a grand event in London on June 6. Unfortunately, his life was cut short on May 30 due to a devastating fire triggered by an air conditioning unit explosion.
His son, Gaurav Kumar, who is the founder of a travel startup, had just returned to Delhi from London on May 26 with plans to celebrate his father's milestone birthday. The family had booked flights for a celebratory trip to London on June 3, but those plans were tragically thwarted.
Late on the evening of May 30, Dhanendra was at home when a fire erupted due to an explosion in the 12-year-old air conditioner. According to police reports, the AC had recently been serviced just a week before Gaurav's return. While Gaurav was on the phone with his wife, he noticed sparks coming from the air conditioning unit in his room around 11 PM. Within moments, the situation escalated into a blazing fire.
At that time, Dhanendra, Gaurav, and his wheelchair-bound wife, Manju, were present at their home along with two domestic helpers. Gaurav's frantic call for help was met with immediate action from Deepak, one of the helpers, who had been with the family since 2018.
As the fire spread, Deepak and Gaurav worked together to rescue Manju from their home. They rushed her to safety before attempting to reach Dhanendra, who was trapped in the bathroom. According to Deepak, Dhanendra assured them he would be out shortly, but when they returned, they found him unconscious amid a haze of smoke.
Deepak recalled his panic as they struggled to bring Dhanendra out, saying, “We then saw him lying near the bathroom. We carried him out.” Tragically, despite their efforts, Dhanendra succumbed to the smoke inhalation and was later pronounced dead at AIIMS Trauma Centre.
Gaurav, who was also hospitalized due to smoke inhalation, found himself grappling with the loss of his father and the abrupt end to their celebratory plans.
Witnesses, including another domestic worker named Abhishek, recounted the chaotic scene as they tried to control the flames until help arrived. Abhishek noted that when he arrived, thick smoke was billowing from the house, and flames were beginning to emerge from Gaurav's room. Despite attempts to extinguish the fire using buckets of water, they had to wait for help as fire tenders took nearly 20-25 minutes to arrive.
The initial police investigation suggests that a faulty wire may have ignited the fire in the air conditioning unit. As the community mourns the loss of Dhanendra, many remember him as a mentor, a dedicated public servant, and a respected figure in their lives.
The tragic death of Dhanendra Kumar highlights the critical importance of home safety, particularly regarding electrical appliances. With summer heating up, the risk of such incidents tends to rise, emphasizing the necessity for regular maintenance and caution. Moreover, this incident serves as a reminder of how quickly life can change, turning joyous occasions into heartbreaking memories.
As the Kumar family navigates this devastating loss, attention will likely shift to the investigation of the fire's cause and the safety protocols surrounding household appliances. Community support will be crucial for Gaurav and his family as they cope with the aftermath of this tragedy.
In remembrance of Dhanendra, the family may consider establishing a foundation or awareness campaign focused on fire safety to honor his legacy. As discussions around home safety continue, this incident could potentially lead to increased awareness and preventive measures within households across the country.
