He remarked, "It's a great thing going forward for the environment and will be influential in helping take a lot of litter off the streets."
The newly launched reverse vending machine at Weston Favell serves as more than just a recycling tool; it symbolizes a growing movement towards environmental responsibility. Trovr's long-term partnership with the Wombles includes this machine as part of a trial for the UK's upcoming Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), which is set to be implemented in October 2027.
Watson elaborated on the positive implications of the initiative, noting, "It's only two machines, but the message it sends shows people this [DRS] is coming. A lot of litter that is on the streets ends up in drains, rivers, and ultimately the sea, so this will help address those issues. Plus, people will get money back, making it a complete win-win."
Under the national DRS initiative, consumers will pay a redeemable deposit on drinks containers, which they can recover by returning the items to designated collection points. However, the Weston Favell machine offers a unique twist: users will receive a printed ticket for their returned items, which they can redeem for rewards at participating stores within the shopping center. Currently, four independent retailers are involved, with an additional 11 expected to join in the near future.
The launch event attracted the attention of local government officials, including Nigel Stansfield, cabinet member for environment, recycling, and waste at the Reform UK-led West Northamptonshire Council. Stansfield expressed optimism regarding the machine's potential to pave the way for the national DRS rollout, stating, "To come along and see the actual machine in use is really useful; we want proven technology [for the national rollout] and by having it here, it's proven technology. Hopefully, by next year, when they're out on the streets, they'll be very reliable and easy to use."
The collaborative effort between the Weston Favell Shopping Centre, Trovr, and the Wombles signifies a commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Matt Harrison, operations manager for the shopping center, echoed this sentiment by saying, "It's a really good cause."
