Discover how Namita Thapar's investment in MindPeers led to a remarkable ₹15 crore revenue growth, transforming mental health services in India.
GlipzoThe popular business reality show, Shark Tank India, concluded its fifth season with total investments reaching ₹94.88 crore, showcasing its evolution from merely an investment platform to a vital arena for startups to gain visibility. Entrepreneurs not only pitch for funds but also leverage this exposure to enhance their brand recognition, ultimately boosting their business performance.
One such success story is that of MindPeers, a mental health platform founded by Kanika Agarwal. After appearing on Shark Tank India during its second season in 2023, MindPeers has transformed from a small venture into a thriving enterprise, recently reporting an impressive ₹15 crore in revenue.
Founded in January 2020 in New Delhi, MindPeers is dedicated to connecting individuals with qualified therapists, addressing a crucial need in mental health services. The platform incorporates artificial intelligence to ensure personalized mental health care, effectively merging technology with traditional therapeutic practices.
During her pitch on Shark Tank, Kanika shared that MindPeers had generated ₹16.5 lakh in revenue by October 2022 and sought an investment of ₹53 lakh in exchange for 1% equity. Her journey into entrepreneurship began with PassionPeers, which she initiated in 2017. Despite its rapid growth, reaching USD 12 million (about ₹90 crore) in two years, the intense pressure led to anxiety and a subsequent exit from the company.
As negotiations unfolded on Shark Tank, Anupam Mittal chose to withdraw, but the remaining investors remained interested. Ultimately, Kanika and her co-founder Shail Chitkara secured an investment of ₹1.06 crore for 2% equity. This comprised ₹53 lakh from Peyush Bansal for 1% equity and an additional ₹53 lakh from Namita Thapar, Aman Gupta, and Vineeta Singh collectively for another 1% equity.
MindPeers' growth trajectory since that pivotal moment has been remarkable. Recently, Namita Thapar took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the platform’s achievements and her personal investment journey. She expressed pride in MindPeers’ impact on mental health and shared her evolving friendship with Kanika, emphasizing their collaborative efforts to enhance mental health resources in schools.
Namita’s commitment extends beyond mere business; she is passionate about training mental health counselors for government schools lacking these essential services. She remarked, “It’s my dream that every school and every child in India should have access to trained mental health therapists! It’s a critical need.” This initiative highlights the growing recognition of mental health as a vital aspect of education in India.
In her post, Namita further noted, “Even prouder that MindPeers, born in India, has now entered global markets with their AI mental health intelligence and made ₹15 crore in revenue last FY.” This statement underscores the global potential of Indian startups in the mental health domain and the growing market for such services.
The success of MindPeers signals a promising future for mental health startups in India, especially as the country increasingly acknowledges the importance of mental wellness. With the backing of influential investors like Namita Thapar, the platform is set to scale even further, potentially expanding its reach and services both locally and internationally.
As awareness and acceptance of mental health issues grow, companies like MindPeers are positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of mental health care in India and beyond. Their journey reflects a broader shift towards prioritizing mental health, signifying a crucial step in the ongoing battle against mental health stigma.
