Karnataka enhances homestay regulations after a tourist's assault. Discover the new safety measures aimed at protecting women travelers.
GlipzoThe proposed measures are designed to not only enhance traveler safety but also to ensure that all accommodations comply with state regulations. District Tourism Inspection Committees will be established, led by deputy commissioners, and will include representatives from various departments, including police and tourism. These committees will conduct random inspections to verify adherence to safety guidelines and operational procedures.
In the event of any emergencies, travelers will have access to Sakshi One Stop Centres, which will offer comprehensive support services, including legal, medical, and psychological assistance. This proactive approach aims to create a safer environment for both international and domestic tourists.
To bolster monitoring efforts, the Karnataka Tourism Department has proposed integrating all registered accommodations into the police’s Smart E-Beat system. This system will facilitate GPS-based tracking of police visits to ensure compliance with safety norms. Moreover, mandatory police verification for all staff members—both permanent and temporary—will be instituted, with thorough record-keeping to support inspections.
In addition, the state is looking to regulate online listings more stringently. Popular travel platforms like MakeMyTrip, Agoda, and Booking.com may soon be required to display government registration numbers for properties, thus ensuring transparency and accountability.
Additional safety measures will include mandatory posting of emergency contact numbers—112, 1090, and the national tourist helpline—at all homestay properties. Furthermore, accommodations will be encouraged to install QR codes that allow guests to download the Karnataka Police SOS app, enhancing their ability to seek help quickly during emergencies.
The government is also contemplating linking registered units directly to the 112 emergency response system, which would streamline the process for handling distress calls and dispatching assistance promptly.
As these changes take shape, stakeholders in the tourism industry and concerned citizens will be watching closely to see how they influence the overall safety landscape for travelers in Karnataka. The commitment to enhancing safety protocols is not only crucial for protecting visitors but also for maintaining Karnataka's reputation as a premier travel destination in India.
