Hawaii's recent storms caused $1 billion in damages, impacting thousands. Governor Green warns residents to stay vigilant as recovery begins.
GlipzoHawaii has recently been hit by a series of devastating storms that have resulted in a staggering $1 billion (£752 million) in damages, according to state officials. Over the course of two back-to-back storms, some areas experienced as much as 50 inches (127 cm) of rain, leading to severe flooding on the island of Oahu and beyond. The relentless downpour has left murky brown floodwaters covering roads and neighborhoods, prompting urgent rescues and a state of emergency.
Governor Josh Green shared the grim update during an interview with Hawaii News Now, revealing that more than 230 individuals have been rescued from dangerous situations amid the flooding. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far. "There were camps that had to be rescued, people were trapped by the water," Green stated. Additionally, the Coast Guard intervened to save individuals stranded on debris in the ocean.
In light of the extensive damage, Governor Green mentioned that the White House has been in communication with his office, expressing their support for the state’s recovery efforts. The flooding that Hawaii is currently experiencing is being characterized as the worst since 2004, marking a significant environmental crisis for the islands.
As of Sunday morning local time, authorities began to lift some evacuation orders and flash flood warnings on Oahu, but the situation remains precarious in other areas. The Hawaii Department of Transportation reported that Kuihelani Highway on Maui was temporarily closed due to fast-moving waters, although it has since reopened. On Saturday, rockfalls impacted various roadways, causing further travel complications.
Governor Green urged residents to remain vigilant, as many roadways continue to face hazardous flooding. "There’s still major flooding all over the place; do not drive through deep water," he cautioned. With forecasts predicting an additional 8 to 10 inches of rain in Maui County over the next few days, safety remains a top priority.
The situation has been dire for many residents. Mikey, a resident of Wahiawa on Oahu, recounted his harrowing experience when floodwaters surged into his home around midnight. "About 12:30 I woke up and the floor was wet, and when I opened the bedroom door, water came rushing in," he recalled, gesturing to show how high the water rose. He and his wife watched helplessly as the floodwaters destroyed their fence and door, ultimately flooding their home.
"We’ve lost everything. Seriously, the water was up to my chest," Mikey shared with a sense of despair. His story is just one of many, reflecting the widespread impact of the storms on residents across the state.
In a notable mention, actor Jason Momoa, known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Aquaman, revealed that he and his family were forced to evacuate their home on the North Shore of Oahu due to the severe weather conditions. "We’re safe for now but there’s a lot of people who weren’t, so sending all of our love," Momoa posted on Instagram Stories, highlighting the grim reality many in the community are facing. He described the conditions on the North Shore as “gnarly,” emphasizing the urgent need for support.
The catastrophic flooding in Hawaii underscores the growing impact of climate change and extreme weather events. As communities grapple with the aftermath of these storms, the economic toll and the challenges of recovery are significant. With infrastructure damaged and homes destroyed, the state will require extensive support for rebuilding efforts.
As Hawaii continues to manage the aftermath of these storms, residents and officials alike are looking toward recovery and rebuilding. The immediate focus will be on ensuring safety as further rainfall is expected. The Hawaii National Guard has been deployed to monitor critical infrastructure such as the Wahiawa dam, which posed a risk of spilling over. Thankfully, water levels have stabilized, alleviating some immediate concerns.
In the coming days, it’s essential to watch how recovery efforts unfold, the potential for further weather disruptions, and the community's resilience in the face of adversity. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and community support in times of crisis.
As Hawaii navigates this challenging period, the path forward will be pivotal in shaping the future resilience of its communities against natural disasters.
