A shocking murder in Mumbai raises questions of revenge vs. financial disputes as gangster Sadiq Kalia's nephew is arrested for killing his great uncle.
GlipzoIn a shocking turn of events, the brutal murder of 78-year-old Mohammad Iqbal Ibrahim Seliya in Mumbai's Madanpura has unveiled two wildly different narratives surrounding the motive for the heinous crime. The incident, which occurred on April 20, has led to speculation of revenge rooted in the city's infamous underworld and allegations of a bitter financial dispute within a family.
The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested 28-year-old Sadiq Jawar, the prime suspect and nephew of notorious gangster Sadiq Kalia. During police interrogation, Jawar confessed that he killed Ibrahim Seliya as an act of vengeance. He believed Seliya had betrayed his late uncle Kalia by tipping off the police about his whereabouts prior to his death in a 1997 police encounter.
According to police reports, Jawar has long harbored the belief that Seliya, a close family member, was responsible for the downfall of his uncle. This long-standing suspicion of betrayal has seemingly festered over the years, culminating in this tragic act of violence.
Jawar’s plan to murder Seliya had been brewing for about three to four months prior to the incident. He enlisted the help of Naushad Mithani, a 24-year-old with a history of theft-related offenses. The duo arrived at Seliya's home armed with three knives measuring 12 inches, 7.5 inches, and 4.5 inches, all of which have been recovered by the authorities.
While the police have painted a picture of revenge, Seliya's family vehemently denies this narrative. They assert that the murder stems from a financial dispute involving a business partnership between Seliya and Jawar’s father, Mohammed Aqib Jawar.
According to Seliya’s wife, Tanzila, her husband had invested a staggering ₹65 lakh in a venture with Aqib, expecting monthly repayments of ₹3.25 lakh. However, delays in payment often led to conflicts, particularly in the months leading up to Seliya's murder. Tensions escalated dramatically after a payment was delayed just days before the attack.
On the evening of the murder, Sadiq Jawar reportedly confronted Seliya over these financial issues. Tanzila recounted that when she left briefly to run errands, she returned to find the door locked from the outside. Upon entering, she discovered her husband lying in a pool of blood, having suffered multiple stab wounds. Despite her efforts to get him medical help, he was pronounced dead at JJ Hospital shortly thereafter.
The familial ties complicate the narrative even further. Sadiq Jawar, who lives with his wife and young daughter in Mira Road, has no prior criminal record, leading many to question whether the murder was indeed premeditated or provoked by a heated argument.
Jawar’s relationship with Mithani is also revealing. The two have been friends for years, with Jawar having previously assisted Mithani in legal troubles. Their bond seems to have contributed to the murderous plot, as Mithani allegedly confessed to stabbing Seliya multiple times while Jawar stood watch.
The backdrop of this murder is laden with the dark legacy of Sadiq Kalia himself, a notorious figure in the Mumbai underworld during the 1990s. With a record of 71 serious offenses, including 14 murders, Kalia was once a prominent enforcer for Dawood Ibrahim's gang. His legacy loomed large over Jawar, who appears to have been influenced by his uncle’s criminal past.
This case not only sheds light on the complex dynamics within families tied to the underworld but also raises questions about the impact of legacy on subsequent generations. The contrasting narratives—one of revenge and the other of financial strife—highlight how deeply rooted issues can fester and eventually lead to tragic consequences.
As investigations continue, the focus will be on the legal proceedings against Jawar and Mithani. The Mumbai Crime Branch is likely to delve deeper into the financial records and family dynamics to uncover the truth behind Seliya's murder. The outcomes could reveal whether this incident is an isolated act of vengeance or indicative of larger issues within the community. With the family's conflicting accounts, the truth may still be shrouded in controversy, leaving many unanswered questions.
The implications of this murder could resonate throughout Mumbai, potentially reigniting discussions on gang violence, family loyalty, and betrayal in a city still grappling with the shadows of its criminal past.
