GlipzoOn March 18, 2026, during an important outreach event at the Zilla Panchayat hall in Belagavi, Rahul Shindhe, the CEO of Zilla Panchayat, emphasized the necessity for farmers and artisans to move beyond traditional production methods. Instead, they should embrace innovative techniques in marketing, packaging, and advertising. The event, titled the 'Outreach and Capacity Building Initiative to Create Opportunities for Growth and Exports in Belagavi,' aimed to empower local producers and artisans to maximize their potential in the marketplace.
Shindhe highlighted that value addition is crucial for the success of all types of products. He stated, "Our farmers and artisans need to look at innovative strategies to market their goods effectively and efficiently." This call to action is particularly relevant in today’s competitive landscape, where unique offerings can set local products apart from mass-produced alternatives.
To facilitate this transition, Shindhe announced a partnership with Exim Bank, aiming to create a robust platform for farmers, artisans, and small industries to market their products effectively. He explained that this collaboration would provide not only marketing assistance but also access to vital resources such as training, mentoring, and subsidies. Furthermore, it will open doors to export opportunities.
He urged various local craftspeople, including handicraftsmen, weavers, potters, and other small home industries, to leverage this initiative. By participating in these programs, they can elevate their production standards and explore potential markets outside the region.
During his address, Shindhe pointed out that several products from Belagavi district are ripe for export. Notable items include: - Khanapur pottery - Athani’s Kolhapuri footwear - Hukkeri Chikkalagudda kaudi - Sanjeevini saffron
Despite the promising market potential, artisans and farmers often encounter obstacles such as a lack of proper training and insufficient financial support. In response, Shindhe noted that Exim Bank is poised to assist in overcoming these challenges, providing tailored support to local producers.
Ravidas Pyage, Deputy General Manager of Exim Bank, reiterated the organization's commitment to fostering small and large enterprises alike. He stated, "Our mission is to transform small businesses into larger-scale industries through comprehensive training and credit facilities." This outreach program specifically targets the unique products of Belagavi district, aiming to unlock their full market potential.
Pyage shared that Exim Bank has successfully supported Bidri artisans, offering guidance in areas such as innovative design, export promotion, and e-commerce. Such initiatives enhance the artisans' ability to reach broader markets and improve their overall business acumen.
Following the speeches, Exim Bank officials engaged with members of various self-help groups, farmers, weavers, and potters from multiple taluks, including Khanapura, Hukkeri, Ramadurga, Chikkodi, Athani, Raybag, and Gokak. The discussions centered around the various forms of assistance Exim Bank offers, aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of local communities.
H.D. Kolekar, the Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department, shared that the government has initiated the formation of 73 farmer produce organizations in the district. He noted that ₹30 crore has been distributed to 1,148 families under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme. Additionally, the recent Karnataka budget allocated ₹100 crore for secondary agriculture, focusing on value addition and allied sectors.
Veteran handicrafts promoter G.N. Gopikrishna advised local farmers to stay informed about market trends and to focus on enhancing the value of their products. He observed a growing interest in regional specialties like Emmer wheat, Belgaum Basmati, and Sankeshwar chili. Gopikrishna firmly believes that items such as Khanapur pottery and Kolhapuri chappals from Athani possess significant market potential, urging producers to capitalize on these opportunities.
As the event concluded, Exim Bank's Deputy Managers, Ganesh Ram and Prince Mehra, elaborated on the diverse services provided by the financial institution. They interacted with industry representatives and members of FPOs and SHGs, providing a clearer understanding of how these resources can empower local enterprises.
The emphasis on innovative marketing strategies, along with the backing of financial institutions like Exim Bank, represents a pivotal moment for Belagavi's farmers and artisans. As they adopt these new strategies and seek out opportunities for growth, the region’s unique offerings could gain recognition on a global scale.
Moving forward, the focus will be on how effectively these initiatives can be implemented and the impact they will have on local economies. Will Belagavi's artisans rise to the challenge and transform their businesses into thriving entities?
