The Delhi HC's Lawyers' Canteen halts main courses due to LPG shortages amid global supply issues, raising concerns for commercial sectors in India.
GlipzoThe Lawyers' Canteen at the Delhi High Court has announced the temporary suspension of its main course menu due to the unavailability of LPG gas cylinders. This disruption, effective immediately, stems from the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, which has led to significant supply chain issues affecting cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, and Delhi itself.
In a notice shared with the public, the canteen expressed its regret over the situation, stating, "This is to respectfully inform you that due to the unavailability of the LPG gas cylinder at present, we regret that we are unable to prepare and serve the main course items in the Lawyers' Canteen." The canteen assured patrons that it would return to normal operations as soon as the gas supply is restored.
Despite the challenges faced by commercial establishments, the Indian government has asserted that there is no nationwide crisis regarding LPG availability. Authorities have directed refineries to increase production by approximately 10% to stabilize supplies and meet demand.
To manage the ongoing supply crunch, the government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act (ECA) and the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA). These measures prioritize household LPG consumption, allowing refineries to operate at full capacity while diverting surplus for residential use. Notably, the government has also extended the LPG booking interval from 21 days to 25 days to curb hoarding.
In a related move, the government introduced a rationing system for natural gas supplies. This new system prioritizes households that receive piped natural gas and vehicles that utilize compressed natural gas (CNG). Under the revised allocation framework, a four-tier priority system has been established to ensure that essential services receive necessary supplies, while lower-priority sectors—such as petrochemical plants, power stations, and oil refineries—will see a reduction in gas availability.
The curbs have raised alarms among commercial users, especially in the hospitality sector, which heavily relies on LPG for daily operations. The Bangalore Hotels Association has voiced concerns over the impacts of this supply interruption, stating, "The supply of gas cylinders for commercial use has been stopped from today. Essential services like senior citizens, students, and hospitals rely on it. Immediate action is expected from Union Ministers to resume commercial gas supply."
The suspension of LPG supplies has caused significant worry among various sectors reliant on gas for cooking and heating. The National Vice President of the LPG Association, RK Gupta, confirmed that the restrictions are in place and emphasized that the next booking for LPG would only be permitted after the new 25-day inter-booking period to prevent hoarding. Gupta also reassured that, contrary to claims by oil companies, there is currently no LPG shortage.
As the government takes measures to stabilize the situation, stakeholders are left hoping for a swift resolution to the supply issues. The hospitality industry is particularly anxious about the future, as continued restrictions could lead to further complications in their operations. The situation remains fluid, with updates expected as authorities respond to the ongoing crisis.
The temporary suspension of main course items at the Lawyers' Canteen underscores the broader implications of the current LPG supply crisis affecting multiple sectors across India. The government’s steps to prioritize household needs over commercial demands reflect the urgency of the situation, particularly amid escalating tensions stemming from international conflicts. As the situation evolves, businesses and consumers alike are left navigating the challenges posed by these restrictions, highlighting the interconnectedness of global events and local markets.
