More than 20 deaths in Ukraine from Russian attacks as rival ceasefires are proposed. What does this mean for the ongoing conflict? Read more.
GlipzoMore than 20 people lost their lives across Ukraine on Tuesday in a series of Russian attacks, just as rival ceasefires were proposed by both Kyiv and Moscow. The conflict, which has escalated significantly since February 2022, continues to bring devastation to civilians caught in the crossfire.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, local officials reported that 12 individuals were killed in a Russian airstrike, an incident described by President Volodymyr Zelensky as a "cynical terrorist strike." Additional casualties included five fatalities in Kramatorsk and four in Dnipro, amplifying the dire human cost of the ongoing conflict.
Across the border in Russia, the Chuvash Republic reported two deaths and 32 injuries due to a drone attack that took place on the same day, indicating that the violence is not confined to Ukraine alone.
On the eve of commemorations for the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany, both Russia and Ukraine announced unilateral ceasefires. Russia indicated that it would observe a ceasefire on May 8 and 9, threatening a "massive missile strike" on central Kyiv if Ukraine violated the truce. In contrast, Kyiv declared an open-ended ceasefire starting from midnight on May 6, suggesting that any actions would be proportional to Russian movements.
These ceasefires are unilateral, implying that no mutual agreement exists regarding their terms, duration, or monitoring conditions. Kyrylo Budanov, Zelensky's chief of staff, emphasized that Ukraine's adherence to the ceasefire would depend on whether Russia reciprocates. "The next move is Russia's," he stated, underlining the precarious balance of power in this tense situation.
Zelensky has called for Russia to lay down its arms and engage in meaningful diplomacy, criticizing the timing of the attacks as a display of utter hypocrisy. He stated, "It's utter cynicism to ask for silence to hold propaganda celebrations and to launch such missile-drone attacks every day beforehand."
As tensions mount ahead of its own ceasefire, Ukraine has also conducted aerial assaults on Russian targets. Ukrainian forces targeted an industrial area in Kirishi within the Leningrad region and a military components factory in Cheboksary, located in the Chuvash Republic. Zelensky confirmed that domestically produced Flamingo cruise missiles were utilized in the Cheboksary strike, which occurred around 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from the front lines.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted six of these missiles and reported the downing of 601 drones in a series of confrontations. On Tuesday morning, several airports across Russia were temporarily closed as authorities scrambled to respond to drone threats. Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, later announced that several drones were intercepted near the capital.
As Victory Day approaches on May 9, the Kremlin has shown signs of anxiety regarding the celebrations, traditionally marked by a grand military parade in Red Square. This year, however, the event will be scaled back due to alleged terrorist threats from Ukraine, and no heavy military hardware will be displayed. Additionally, residents of Moscow have been warned about potential disruptions to mobile internet services in the days leading up to the event.
Zelensky remarked that the Kremlin's inability to hold a parade without Ukrainian compliance for a ceasefire indicates that it may be time for Russian leaders to reconsider their approach to the ongoing conflict. He stated, "It's time to take steps to end their war," emphasizing the futility of continued aggression.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified its drone warfare strategy, successfully targeting Russian energy facilities and oil refineries, significantly disrupting the Russian oil trade. This capability allows Ukrainian drones to penetrate deep into Russian territory, often bypassing air defense systems. Just on Monday, one drone struck a high-rise building in central Moscow, showcasing the expanded reach and effectiveness of Ukraine's military operations.
On the other hand, Russian strikes continue to wreak havoc on Ukrainian cities, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and destruction. Thousands have perished since the conflict escalated, highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable resolution.
As both sides prepare for their respective ceasefires, the next few days will be critical in determining the course of this conflict. With Victory Day celebrations looming, the potential for further escalations remains high. Observers will be keenly watching for any signs of compliance with the proposed ceasefires and the military actions that may follow.
The international community remains engaged, with many calling for genuine negotiations and an end to hostilities. The situation is fluid, and as both sides navigate their military strategies amid a backdrop of escalating violence, the prospect for peace seems increasingly precarious. What unfolds in the coming days will be crucial in shaping the future of this conflict and the lives of countless civilians caught in the crossfire.
