In a recent interview, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose asserted that the fallout from the SIR exercise has significantly overshadowed any localized anti-incumbency sentiments in West Bengal. This strategic advantage positions the Trinamool Congress (TMC) favorably against the BJP in the upcoming state Assembly elections.
Ghose, who has emerged as one of the TMC's key campaign figures, expressed confidence in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that there is no disenchantment among her supporters. Instead, she noted that any discontent that may have existed was primarily directed at certain local leaders who have been replaced as candidates for the elections.
On March 17, Mamata Banerjee unveiled a list of 291 candidates for the elections, which included the notable decision to drop 74 sitting MLAs, nearly one-third of the party's legislative representation. This move is indicative of a well-thought-out strategy aimed at countering potential anti-incumbency pressures.
According to Ghose, the BJP's intention was to leverage the SIR process to undermine Banerjee's leadership and seize control of West Bengal, where she has consistently outperformed the saffron party for the last 15 years. However, she believes that the BJP's efforts have backfired, inadvertently granting the TMC a distinct edge. She remarked, "If there was any local-level anti-incumbency brewing at all, that has been completely obscured by the SIR exercise. It was a gross mistake that the BJP committed."
The SIR exercise has cast doubts on the citizenship status of various residents, including notable figures such as Nobel laureate Amartya Sen and former chief secretary Nandini Chakravorty. Ghose emphasized that this has sparked an anti-BJP sentiment across the state. She questioned, "Where are the infiltrators about whom the BJP was so vocal?"
Her remarks highlight the growing frustration among the populace regarding the BJP's tactics, which could backfire as voters become increasingly aware of the implications of the SIR process. Ghose stated, "Let them delete as many names as they want. We will still win."
Ghose praised Banerjee’s dedication as a leader, emphasizing her direct connection with the people of West Bengal. She mentioned, "She is a 24x7 politician, in touch with her people. After three terms, some amount of anti-incumbency at the local level is natural. But there is no such sentiment against her as a Chief Minister."
This sentiment reflects a broader appreciation among constituents for Banerjee’s governance, which Ghose argues has been overlooked by mainstream media outlets. She described Banerjee as a “political phenomenon that is unique in South Asia,” highlighting her ability to navigate the challenging landscape of Indian politics without a traditional political legacy.
In response to concerns about women's safety in West Bengal, Ghose reaffirmed the TMC's commitment to empowering women leaders within the party. She stated, **“We are a women-first party and there’s no way we will tolerate crimes against women.
