Discover Aqara's G350, the first Matter-compatible camera, featuring 4K video and smart home integration. Is it worth your investment?
GlipzoThe Aqara G350 has made a significant entrance into the smart home market as the first camera to support Matter 1.5. Announced at CES and released this week, this pan-and-tilt indoor security camera promises enhanced smart home integration, specifically through Samsung SmartThings. With 4K video resolution and a dual-lens setup, the G350 is designed to elevate your home security experience, but it currently comes with limitations that users should be aware of.
At first glance, the G350 impresses with its advanced features: - Dual-lenses: A 4K wide-angle lens paired with a 2.5K telephoto lens for diverse viewing options. - Hybrid zoom capability: Up to 9x zoom to capture fine details. - 360-degree coverage: Its compact pan-tilt mechanism allows for complete room monitoring. - Physical lens shutter: This feature ensures enhanced privacy by covering the lens when the camera is powered off.
In addition to its core functionalities as a camera, the G350 also serves as a smart home hub for Aqara’s Zigbee devices and functions as a Matter controller, bridge, and Thread Border Router. Furthermore, it supports Apple's HomeKit Secure Video, along with integration options for Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and other platforms via cloud connectivity. Users can also opt for local storage via a microSD card and utilize RTSP support for streaming to various platforms, including Home Assistant.
While the G350 boasts impressive specs, users may encounter challenges during the initial setup, particularly with Matter integration. After setting up the camera, I experienced several firmware updates before successfully connecting it as a Matter camera. Initially, attempts to onboard the device via the SmartThings app were unsuccessful, with the camera being recognized as a hub instead of a camera.
To resolve this, I opted to add the camera through the Aqara app, which ultimately allowed me to install the necessary updates for Matter 1.5 support. This step was crucial for linking the G350 to the SmartThings platform as a camera, taking advantage of Matter’s multi-admin feature. To connect effectively, users will need a SmartThings Matter Controller.
One of the most significant benefits of Matter is its potential to streamline smart home management. Traditionally, users with a variety of camera brands, such as Ring, Aqara, and Eufy, have faced the hassle of juggling multiple apps to access various features. Matter aims to change this by allowing cameras to be managed through a single platform, thereby simplifying the user experience.
With Matter, users can expect enhanced functionalities including: - Unified control of various camera brands through one app. - Advanced automation capabilities, such as linking camera actions to other smart home events (e.g., turning on lights when unlocking the door). - Comprehensive features for security cameras, including live streaming, two-way audio, and control over pan-tilt-zoom functions. - Privacy and security options, like the ability to set detection zones and decide on local or cloud-based storage with end-to-end encryption.
Despite these promising functionalities, the G350’s current performance within the SmartThings app falls short of expectations. As of now, I could only access limited features: live streaming, snapshot capabilities, and two-way talk. Although the app displayed controls for pan, tilt, and zoom, those functionalities were not operational during my testing.
According to the Matter Alpha blog, Samsung has plans to roll out more features in the SmartThings app that will fully leverage the capabilities of Matter cameras. However, until those updates are implemented, users may find themselves limited in their ability to utilize the G350 to its fullest potential.
The introduction of the Aqara G350 as the first Matter-compatible camera represents a pivotal moment for the smart home industry. While the current limitations may affect user experience, the potential for improved integration across various platforms is undeniably exciting. As more devices adopt Matter certification, consumers can look forward to a more cohesive smart home ecosystem where interoperability is the norm rather than the exception.
The Aqara G350 is just the beginning of a smarter, more interconnected future for home security. As technology evolves, the possibilities for enhanced user experience and convenience are vast, making this an exciting time for smart home enthusiasts.
