Explore how YouTube has eclipsed TV for celebrities like Farah Khan, revealing new earning potentials and the future of digital content creation.
GlipzoCelebrity figures from the world of film and television, such as Farah Khan and Archana Puran Singh, have embraced this digital revolution by launching their own channels. These platforms have allowed them to share personal insights, behind-the-scenes footage, podcasts, and even participate in fun challenges, bringing fans closer than ever before. The transformation has been so profound that many stars have acknowledged the financial benefits, with some even reporting earnings from YouTube that exceed their traditional income.
To better understand the dynamics of YouTube monetization, SCREEN reached out to Vinay Thakur, the creator behind the popular channel AVRprankTV, which boasts nearly 7 million subscribers. He shed light on the complexities of YouTube's payment structure, emphasizing the lack of clarity surrounding earnings. “We are never told exactly what we are paid for a video,” Vinay explained. “There’s no clarity on how much YouTube earns from our content and what share we get.” He elaborated that creators typically receive around 45% of the revenue generated from ads, though this figure remains unverified.
Vinay noted, “Sometimes you earn $60 for 100,000 views, and other times just $45.” Such fluctuations highlight the unpredictable nature of earnings on the platform, influenced by factors like seasonality and advertiser demand. The potential for income is substantial; for instance, a video featuring Farah Khan that garners 4 million views could yield anywhere from Rs 1.7 lakh to Rs 2.4 lakh in ad revenue, based on CPM estimates.
Vinay further elaborated on how diverse monetization strategies have become for creators today. Besides ad revenue, content creators can also monetize through: - Brand collaborations - Affiliate marketing and product tagging - Sponsored content - YouTube Shorts monetization
With the potential for substantial income through various revenue streams, YouTube presents a promising avenue for both established stars and emerging creators. As Vinay noted, “YouTube is a free platform where artists are their own boss.” This freedom allows creators to experiment and refine their content in ways that traditional media often restricts.
