Telangana's 2026-27 budget sees a 5% increase for Minorities Welfare. Explore key allocations, concerns, and future implications for community support.
GlipzoPresented on March 20, 2026, by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the budget encompasses several initiatives aimed at uplifting minorities. These include the distribution of 10,000 sewing machines to women and skill development training for 4,655 youth. Such measures aim to empower these communities economically and socially.
However, not all aspects of the budget are viewed positively. The allocation for reimbursement of tuition fees (RTF) has seen a stark decrease, dropping from ₹300 crore in 2025-26 to just ₹100 crore in the new budget. This reduction has raised concerns among minority leaders, including the Students Islamic Organisation, which previously petitioned for the timely disbursal of pending funds from prior years.
In a bid to enhance educational infrastructure, ₹123.15 crore has been set aside under the PM Jan Vikas Karyakram. This program is crucial for the construction of schools and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), aiming to improve access to quality education for minority communities.
He criticized the absence of progress on several initiatives, including the establishment of a minorities sub-plan and the ₹1,000 crore annual loan subsidy for unemployed youth and women, which remains unimplemented. Furthermore, financial assistance programs such as Taufa-e-Taleem, designed to support students from Class X to Ph.D., have yet to be launched. Owaisi also highlighted the pending amendments to the Telangana Minorities Commission Act, calling for immediate attention to these issues.
However, the significant cut in tuition fee reimbursement raises questions about the government's commitment to ensuring accessible education for all. The mixed reactions from minority leaders underline the ongoing challenges in achieving equitable support for these communities.
As community leaders continue to advocate for their needs, the government's responsiveness in the coming months will be vital in determining the effectiveness of these budget allocations in improving the lives of minority citizens in Telangana.
