Vijay's TVK shocks everyone by emerging as the largest party in Tamil Nadu's 2026 elections. Discover the story behind this surprising rise to power.
GlipzoIn a stunning turn of events, actor Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has emerged as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections of 2026. Defying expectations set by various political analysts and exit polls, TVK has secured a remarkable victory in its inaugural electoral contest, anticipated to claim over 100 seats out of the total 234.
This unexpected triumph highlights the shifting dynamics in Tamil Nadu politics. While Axis My India had forecasted such a success for TVK, most other sources were skeptical, estimating that the party would struggle to surpass 30 seats. With these results, Vijay is poised to become the fourth actor in history to assume the role of Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu, joining the ranks of MG Ramachandran (MGR), Janaki Ramachandran, and J Jayalalithaa.
Although speculation about Vijay’s entry into politics began as early as the late 2000s, he formally launched TVK in February 2024. A significant milestone in his journey occurred in 2009 when he founded the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, a fan club that later transitioned into a social welfare organization. Its official launch in Pudukkottai on July 26, 2009, marked the beginning of Vijay's philanthropic endeavors.
In an intriguing political move during the 2011 Assembly elections, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam endorsed the AIADMK-led front, shocking many. His father, SA Chandrasekhar, a prominent film director, met with AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa to convey their support. Chandrasekhar stated, "We are not a political outfit. We are not against anybody. We only want a political change in the State now in the interest of the whole society." This endorsement came at a time when the AIADMK secured a staggering 203 seats, leaving the DMK-led coalition with only 31 seats.
Despite the initial foray into politics through the fan club, Vijay and his family did not pursue a political path actively until 2020. A controversy arose when Chandrasekhar registered a political party named All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (TVMI) with the Election Commission of India (ECI). However, Vijay quickly distanced himself from this development, asserting, “There is no relation whatsoever between the political party that my father has started and me, directly or indirectly.”
In a further effort to clarify his stance, he urged his fans not to affiliate with the party merely because of his father's involvement. Chandrasekhar took on the role of general secretary, while Vijay’s mother, Shoba, became the treasurer. Despite their intentions, the controversy escalated, leading Vijay to file a lawsuit against 11 individuals, including his parents, resulting in the dissolution of TVMI. Shoba later remarked that she was unaware of her husband’s plans when she agreed to join the organization, emphasizing that Vijay would ultimately decide his political path.
Vijay's rise to prominence is attributed not only to his acting career but also to the strategic groundwork laid by his parents. SA Chandrasekhar has been a pivotal figure in shaping Vijay's public persona and political aspirations. Their family's journey reflects a blend of personal ambition and public service, demonstrating how familial influence can significantly impact political trajectories.
The 2026 elections have proven that Vijay's popularity transcends traditional political boundaries. His ability to navigate complex family dynamics while launching a successful political career underscores the unique landscape of Tamil Nadu politics, where film stars often transition to political leaders.
Looking ahead, the implications of TVK's success are profound. As Vijay prepares to step into a leadership role, he must address the expectations of his supporters and the challenges that come with governance. The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is evolving, and his administration will likely focus on issues like youth empowerment, employment opportunities, and social welfare.
As the state watches closely, Vijay’s next steps will be critical in determining not only his own political legacy but also the future direction of Tamil Nadu governance. Will he maintain his momentum and fulfill the promises made during the campaign? Only time will tell, but the spotlight is certainly on him now.
