Discover Shruti Seth's exclusive reflections on her Fanaa experience, including a shocking lesson from Saroj Khan that shaped her career. Click to learn more!
GlipzoAs Fanaa celebrates its 20th anniversary, the film continues to resonate as a landmark in Indian cinema. Released in 2006, this socio-political romantic thriller starred Aamir Khan and Kajol, quickly climbing the ranks to become one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of that year. In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, actress Shruti Seth, who played Fatima—Kajol’s supportive friend—shared her memorable experiences from the film set, including an unforgettable encounter with the late, legendary choreographer Saroj Khan.
Shruti recalled the significance of the Fanaa shoot in her life, stating, “It was my first Yash Raj Films production, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.” Interestingly, she also met her current husband, Danish Aslam, during the filming, who worked as the assistant director. “We didn’t realize we would end up dating, and when we married in Goa, director Kunal Kohli officiated our wedding,” she added, emphasizing the familial bond formed during the production.
During the interview, Shruti reminisced about the time spent on set, where cast and crew engaged in games like chess and scrabble while building friendships. However, she also reflected on the formidable presence of Saroj Khan, who choreographed the iconic patriotic number ‘Des Rangila’. Known for her strict and demanding approach, Khan’s intensity was not lost on the young actress. “I got scolded by her,” Shruti admitted, recalling how Khan’s high standards stemmed from her deep respect for the craft.
“Today, we might question such strictness in the industry,” she noted. “But one must understand that legends like her treat their art as a religion.” Shruti explained that while one might not condone harsh treatment, it’s essential to appreciate the dedication and perfectionism that greats like Khan expect from their colleagues.
Shruti opened up about a specific incident where Saroj Khan’s frustration boiled over. “I was busy chatting with my then-boyfriend while she was giving instructions, and I got yelled at. She demanded, ‘Everyone will stop, and Shruti will perform for everyone.’ I felt completely mortified,” she recalled. Khan’s piercing question, “Do you think you’re worthy of being here?” haunted her, emphasizing the importance of focus and commitment on set.
“I was shooting for Shararat at the time, which made her even more irritated,” she explained, recognizing the pressure Khan was under to maintain a certain level of excellence. Yet, the choreographer also had a nurturing side, transforming from a strict taskmaster into a caring mentor once the cameras stopped rolling. “She was like a mother hen to everyone off-camera,” Shruti reflected. “I miss having mentors who demand nothing less than 100% commitment.”
The plot of Fanaa revolves around a blind Kashmiri woman, played by Kajol, who falls in love with Rehan Qadri (Aamir Khan), a tour guide. As the story unfolds, she discovers that Rehan is not only alive, but also involved with a separatist organization. The film faced significant challenges during its release, including a ban in Gujarat, highlighting the film’s controversial themes.
The film’s narrative, dealing with love, betrayal, and socio-political issues, sparked discussions and debates, marking it as a film that transcends mere entertainment. Its complex portrayal of relationships and moral dilemmas resonated with audiences and critics alike.
As Fanaa reaches this milestone, it is crucial to reflect on its cultural significance and lasting impact on the film industry. The insights shared by Shruti Seth not only shed light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics but also remind us of the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines iconic figures like Saroj Khan. As the film continues to inspire new generations, it will be interesting to see how its themes resonate in today's cinematic landscape.
