Sandeep Patil discusses how Amitabh Bachchan's accident impacted his film career, revealing personal struggles and addressing industry rumors.
GlipzoIn a captivating revelation, cricketer Sandeep Patil recently shared insights about his brief film career and an unfortunate incident involving Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan. The incident took place during the filming of Coolie, where Bachchan suffered a near-fatal accident after being injured on set. This unexpected event ultimately led to the cancellation of a planned cameo appearance by Bachchan in Patil's film, Kabhi Ajnabee.
Sandeep Patil, who rose to fame as a cricketer, briefly ventured into acting in 1983, following India's historic World Cup victory. His decision to pursue a film career sparked various theories, particularly regarding his choice to skip the West Indies tour shortly after the tournament. However, Patil clarified that his motivation was rooted in a serious injury he sustained.
During a recent conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Patil addressed speculation about his career shift, humorously responding to a question about whether he was distracted by Bollywood's allure. He remarked, “If you get an opportunity to romance Poonam Dhillon on screen, how do you say no?” His lightheartedness contrasted with the underlying truth of his situation—an acromial fracture that required surgery, leading to extensive recovery time and ultimately influencing his cricket career.
Patil emphasized that the injury was the genuine reason behind missing the West Indies tour, stating, “People only gossip. But nobody knows the reality.” He expanded on his entry into the film industry, explaining how connections with former cricketer Arvind Apte opened doors for him in Bollywood. While recuperating, he was introduced to Vijay Singhrao Patwardhan, whose family ties led to Patil being offered a role in the film.
“I was lucky to get such opportunities,” he noted, recognizing the chance to witness the filmmaking process firsthand. In Kabhi Ajnabee, he starred alongside Dhillon and actress Debashree Roy, adding to his experience in the film industry.
In a surprising twist, Patil revealed that Amitabh Bachchan was set to make a guest appearance in his film but could not participate due to unforeseen circumstances. “I had the chance to share the screen with Mr. Bachchan. Nobody knows this because it has never been reported,” Patil shared. He recounted how he reached out to Patwardhan after the World Cup, and Bachchan graciously agreed to appear in the film.
The planned shooting was set in Bangalore, where the camera crew was prepared for the arrival of the iconic actor. However, when Bachchan did not show up, Patil personally visited his hotel to inquire. There, he learned from Jaya Bachchan that the actor had experienced a severe accident during the filming of Coolie and had been rushed to Mumbai.
“It was my bad luck,” Patil remarked, reflecting on how the collaboration could have significantly impacted his career. “Just imagine—Amitabh Bachchan and Sandeep Patil together on the big screen. It could have changed my life.”
Patil's foray into acting wasn’t without its share of controversy. Beyond facing criticism for his performance, rumors circulated regarding an alleged affair with co-star Debashree Roy, which some speculated contributed to the breakdown of his first marriage. Addressing these claims, he clarified, “If that had been the case, I wouldn’t have married my wife Deepa. Debashree is a very dear friend.” Despite the rumors, Patil expressed a desire to reconnect with Roy, although efforts to do so have not materialized.
Sandeep Patil’s experiences highlight the unpredictable nature of life, where personal and professional paths intertwine in unexpected ways. His reflections on Amitabh Bachchan's accident and the subsequent impact on his film career provide insight into how external events can alter one’s trajectory. While the collaboration with Bachchan never materialized, the story sheds light on the complexities faced by athletes transitioning into other fields and the rumors that can cloud public perception.
The rich tapestry of Patil’s journey, marked by both triumphs in cricket and the challenges of the film world, serves as a reminder of how quickly circumstances can change and the significance of seizing opportunities when they arise.
