Roblox, the immensely popular gaming platform with 144 million daily users globally, is facing scrutiny regarding its newly expanded child safety measures. The platform has recently introduced age-specific accounts, namely Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, which determine how users interact with the game based on their estimated age. This initiative aims to enhance child safety, but many parents express concerns over inaccuracies in the age estimation process, fearing their children may be misclassified as older users, hence receiving less protection.

Parents have raised alarms after discovering that their children were mistakenly identified as adults during the age-check process. These misclassifications can lead to reduced parental controls and expose young users to inappropriate content. In an exclusive interview with BBC News, Roblox's Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, defended the company's age-estimation technology, which employs facial analysis and is utilized by millions of users daily. He stated that the system typically estimates age within 1.4 years, plus or minus, particularly for those under 18, asserting its reliability compared to self-reported ages.

Kaufman pointed out that asking users to disclose their age directly often leads to inaccuracies, as individuals may provide false information to gain unrestricted access to the platform. He explained, “When you ask them that simple question, users are going to tell you whatever they want to tell you in order to get access.”

Age Checks and User Safety: An Expanded Approach

To bolster safety, Roblox already mandates an age verification process before users can access chat features. This system categorizes users into age bands, aiming to minimize risky interactions between children and adults. The recent changes further this initiative by creating specific account types based on age verification. Users who fail to complete the age check will be limited to child-friendly content and prohibited from any form of communication on the platform.

This initiative comes in the wake of concerning incidents, including a case where the mother of a 14-year-old girl reported that her daughter had been groomed into sharing explicit images with an 18-year-old man. Kaufman elaborated on the methodologies employed to assess which games are suitable for players under 16. Despite the platform’s efforts, some developers believe that parents should maintain a vigilant watch over their children's activities on Roblox due to ongoing safety concerns. While Roblox acknowledges that errors in age classification can occur, Kaufman suggested that many complaints stem from parents completing the age checks incorrectly on behalf of their children or misinterpreting the system’s processes. To assist parents, Roblox provides options for resetting age checks, submitting appeals, or employing ID verification to amend any errors. Additionally, if user behavior seems inconsistent with their estimated age, they may be prompted to re-verify.
