Rishabh Pant remains defiant despite LSG's ninth IPL loss. Discover his insights on team spirit and the impact of experience in cricket.
GlipzoIn a tumultuous season for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rishabh Pant faced a challenging day, marked by his removal as vice-captain of the Indian Test team and being dropped from the ODI squad. Despite these setbacks, Pant remained defiant after LSG's ninth defeat of the IPL 2026 season, suffering a seven-wicket loss to the Rajasthan Royals in a crucial match. With just one game left in the season, Pant's unwavering belief in his team shone through.
"See, like I said, you know, we are proud as a team regardless of how the situation is right now. You know the kind of team we have, you know we can win this, regardless of anything, we are confident enough as a team and, you know, as individuals, it hasn’t gone our way and everyone knows that, but that doesn’t take away the fact that we are a f*ng good team,” Pant stated passionately while speaking with Ian Bishop on JioHotstar*.
In their latest outing, Lucknow batted first and managed to post a respectable score of 220 for 5 over 20 overs, thanks to a stellar performance from all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who smashed 96 runs off 57 balls. At one point, LSG looked to be in a commanding position at 151 for 2 in just 12.2 overs, but they faltered in the final overs, scoring only 26 runs in the last three overs.
Pant lamented the missed opportunity to capitalize on their strong start. He reflected on the final over bowled by Jofra Archer, noting that they could have scored an additional 5 to 10 runs given the conditions of the wicket. "I think it’s a few ways to look at it. I think in the last over, the way Archer bowled, I think it was really good. We could have actually scored like, you know, this kind of wicket you can actually score five or ten runs more when you get that kind of start and we could not capitalize on the last over,” he explained.
The absence of seasoned bowler Mohammad Shami was felt keenly as Lucknow's bowling attack comprised mainly of pacers Akash Singh, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Prince Yadav. The bowlers struggled, with Singh and Yadav conceding 54 and 50 runs, respectively, during their spells. Pant addressed the difficulties his bowlers faced on such a pitch, underscoring the challenges of maintaining bowling plans against a formidable opponent like the Rajasthan Royals.
“It’s definitely a difficult one for sure because you know, you want to back your bowlers. But sometimes it’s hard. Because on a wicket like this, there is less margin for the bowler. Just having too many suggestions does not work. Sometimes, you have to keep a simple plan and keep focusing on that one ball at a time and just try to execute the plan,” Pant articulated.
When questioned about the impact of Shami's absence, Pant acknowledged the value of experience in high-pressure scenarios. He expressed that experienced players bring a level of composure and strategy that can’t be quickly replaced.
“You know, experience is something you’re gonna always miss, regardless of how it’s gonna go, good or bad. Because experience cannot be earned overnight. It takes years for people to gain that experience. And definitely in a pressure situation, that’s one thing which keeps you out for sure,” Pant noted, highlighting the importance of seasoned players in critical matches.
As the IPL season nears its conclusion, the Lucknow Super Giants find themselves at a crossroads. With just one match left, the team must regroup and refocus. Pant's rallying cry suggests that despite their struggles, there remains a deep-seated belief in their capabilities as a team.
Fans are eager to see how LSG will approach their final match, which could serve as a critical moment to regain some pride in the tournament. Will they harness their frustrations into a powerful performance, or will the specter of a disappointing season continue to loom over them?
As IPL 2026 wraps up, all eyes will be on Lucknow Super Giants to see if they can secure a final victory and end their season on a high note. The future of this team, and Pant’s leadership, will certainly be under scrutiny as they look ahead to the next season and potential roster changes.
