Raja Shivaji: A New Milestone in Indian Cinema

In a significant shift for Bollywood, Raja Shivaji has officially earned its place in an elite group of films surpassing the three-hour runtime mark, clocking in at an impressive 3 hours and 15 minutes. This historical drama, which is set to hit cinemas on May 1, 2026, is not just a film; it represents a growing trend in Indian cinema where longer runtimes are increasingly embraced by audiences.

Historically, movies with runtimes extending past three hours were met with skepticism. However, the landscape began to change with the release of Animal in 2023, featuring Ranbir Kapoor. With a runtime of 203 minutes, it was met with considerable acclaim. Following suit, Pushpa 2 – The Rule (2024) and Dhurandhar (2025) also embraced extended runtimes, with Dhurandhar The Revenge (2026) reaching an astonishing 229 minutes. Additionally, Border 2 (2026) joined this trend with a runtime of 199 minutes. These films not only challenged traditional norms but also achieved remarkable box office success, proving that audiences are willing to invest their time in captivating storytelling.

The Censor Process and Necessary Edits

Recently, Bollywood Hungama revealed that Raja Shivaji completed its censor process on April 24, 2026. According to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Marathi version of the film has a precise runtime of 195.05 minutes. The film has received a U/A 16+ certificate, allowing it to reach a broader audience while ensuring age-appropriate content.

However, the CBFC did request specific changes before granting approval. The Examining Committee advised the filmmakers to enhance the clarity of the disclaimer and adjust the voiceover for better understanding. They also required the producers to provide documentation for historical references and submit the complete script aligned with the film's dialogues and songs.

Importantly, the CBFC mandated that all significant historical events in the movie include specific dates and text slates, ensuring that audiences have context for the unfolding narrative. Fortunately, the film only underwent two minor cuts: the removal of a scene depicting a child's throat being slit, which was substituted with a more suitable visual, and the addition of audio to accompany certain muted visuals.

A Talented Cast and Crew

Raja Shivaji boasts a star-studded cast led by Riteish Deshmukh, who portrays the iconic figure of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He is joined by a remarkable lineup of actors including Genelia Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Fardeen Khan, Bhagyashree, Sachin Khedekar, Amole Gupte, and Jitendra Joshi. The film is produced by Mumbai Film Company, co-owned by Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh, in collaboration with Jio Studios, led by Jyoti Deshpande.

The anticipation surrounding Raja Shivaji has already begun to generate buzz, with notable figures in the industry, including Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar, expressing their support for the film's trailer. This excitement suggests that it may not only be a cinematic experience but also a cultural event that celebrates the legacy of one of India's most revered historical figures.

Why This Matters for Indian Cinema

The increasing acceptance of longer films like Raja Shivaji signals a crucial evolution in Indian cinema. Audiences are more open to narratives that take time to develop, allowing filmmakers to delve deeper into their stories and characters. This trend may inspire more creators to produce films that honor the rich history and culture of India while pushing the boundaries of conventional storytelling.

The success of longer films could reshape production strategies, prompting studios to invest in grander narratives and more elaborate productions, ultimately enriching the cinematic landscape.

As we approach the film's release, all eyes will be on Raja Shivaji to see whether it can replicate the success of its predecessors. Will it further validate the trend of extended runtimes in Bollywood?

What’s Next for Raja Shivaji?

With only days left until its release, the film is positioned to either reinforce or reshape audience perceptions of lengthy narratives in cinema. Industry analysts and fans alike will be watching closely to gauge the film's box office performance, critical reception, and its ability to resonate with audiences. The movie's performance could have lasting implications for future projects, encouraging filmmakers to take bold risks with storytelling and runtime.

As Raja Shivaji prepares to make its mark, it serves as a reminder of the evolving nature of film and the power of storytelling in connecting with audiences across generations.
