Bihar's electricity consumers breathe a sigh of relief as the BERC announces no tariff hike for 2026-27, ensuring affordability and transparency.
GlipzoThe BERC's decision marks a critical point for households and businesses relying on electricity in Bihar. By rejecting proposals from both the North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd and the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd, which sought a 35 paise increase in energy charges, the Commission has prioritized consumer welfare over utility demands.
The confirmed tariff rates will remain in effect until March 31, 2027, or until the Commission issues a new tariff order. This stability is crucial for consumers, especially in a time of fluctuating economic conditions.
The merger of two slabs into a single category for DS-II (urban domestic) and NDS-I (rural commercial) users, as well as NDS-II (urban commercial) consumers, will lead to reductions in energy charges: - DS-II consumers will see a reduction of ₹1.53 per unit. - NDS-I consumers will experience a decrease of ₹0.42 per unit. - NDS-II consumers benefit from a reduction of ₹1.20 per unit.
This change is expected to benefit approximately 27 lakh consumers, offering a more streamlined process and potentially lowering their electricity costs.
Currently, 1.86 crore power consumers benefit from 125 units of free electricity per month through the Mukhya Mantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayta Yojana. This initiative has resulted in substantial savings, allowing urban consumers to save ₹550 per month and rural consumers using up to 125 units to save ₹3.
This move is particularly important in a climate where economic pressures are felt across various sectors, and maintaining affordable electricity is vital for both households and businesses. The emphasis on transparency and fairness in billing practices can lead to increased trust in regulatory bodies and utilities alike.
It will be essential for consumers to remain engaged with ongoing discussions around energy tariffs and subsidies, as these decisions will impact their daily lives. As the regulatory landscape evolves, the BERC’s commitment to stability and transparency will be crucial in guiding Bihar’s electricity consumers into the future.
