Milind Soman's Remarkable Achievement at 60

On May 1, 2023, in a stunning display of endurance and determination, actor and fitness icon Milind Soman made headlines by successfully swimming the challenging 15-kilometer Strait of Gibraltar. With the Indian flag proudly in hand, Soman completed the grueling swim from Tarifa, Spain, to the Moroccan coast in under five hours, astonishing many who wondered how a 60-year-old could accomplish such a feat. The top comment on social media echoed this disbelief: "How is this man 60?"

Soman was not alone; he was joined by three fellow swimmers, all in their thirties. When speaking to The Indian Express, he described the Gibraltar crossing as one of the most demanding open-water challenges in the world. With treacherous currents, unpredictable tides, dense shipping traffic, and chilly water temperatures that drop to a frigid 15°C, the conditions are anything but forgiving. Despite these challenges, Soman attributed his success to years of disciplined training rather than last-minute preparations, saying, “Decades of consistent effort rather than a sudden push got me through.”

A Journey Nearly a Decade in the Making

Soman’s journey toward this monumental swim began in 2017 when he first applied to the Gibraltar Swimming Association. Securing a slot to swim in the strait, renowned as one of the busiest shipping lanes globally, is no small task. Only one support boat is allowed per swimmer each day, and the schedule heavily relies on favorable weather conditions and maritime traffic. After applying in 2017, he had nearly forgotten about it until a friend rekindled the opportunity years later, allowing him to prepare for the postponed challenge.

By the time the swim opportunity arose again, Soman had already been preparing his body. He would only need a few days of swimming half an hour in the straits to acclimatize to the cold water.

A Foundation Built Over 25 Years

Soman emphasizes that no supernatural training regimen contributed to his accomplishment. “Marathons for 25 years—that’s what kept me fit,” he explains. He maintained a consistent routine of swimming just a few times a month, which he believed was sufficient for his fitness level.

His endurance journey began long before he became a household name in India. As a competitive swimmer, he represented the country in national events, particularly excelling in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. His foray into running came later, sparked by his participation in the Mumbai Half Marathon, which led him to discover running as a straightforward form of cardiovascular exercise.

Soman's running journey evolved from 10-km runs to ultramarathons, eventually culminating in his iconic 1,500-km run from Delhi to Mumbai over 30 days at 47 years old. His gradual increase in distance reflects his philosophy of consistent effort.

Preparation for the Strait of Gibraltar

Interestingly, Soman did not engage in extensive training specifically for the Gibraltar swim. Instead, he focused on maintaining a solid fitness baseline throughout the year. Earlier in the year, he had completed several long-distance swims in Goa, including distances close to 20 km. He also participated in his first Ironman event, which includes a 3.86 km swim, 180.25 km bike ride, and a 42.2 km run.

“I didn't overtrain or prepare specifically for the event; I maintained a consistent baseline,” he stated, reiterating his belief that maintaining fitness year-round keeps the body capable of handling extreme challenges.

A Simple Yet Effective Daily Routine

Soman's daily regimen reflects his straightforward approach to fitness. He avoids gyms and trendy diets, opting instead for a routine that begins with sit-ups and leg raises in bed, followed by planks, multiple rounds of Surya Namaskar, and push-ups. “Nothing elaborate. No extreme protocols. Just repetition of the same drill,” he asserts.

His nutritional choices are equally pragmatic. He favors local, seasonal, home-cooked meals, incorporating fruits and whole grains while steering clear of heavily processed foods. This sensible approach to diet complements his commitment to physical fitness.

Battling the Cold During the Swim

While many might assume that fatigue would be the primary challenge during such a long swim, Soman reveals that the real battle was maintaining his core body temperature. At 15°C, the water can quickly become a physiological hurdle. The support crew carefully managed his hydration and nutrition throughout the crossing, abiding by open-water rules that prohibit touching the boat. Every 45 minutes, they provided him with nutrition and hydration to keep his energy levels up.

Why It Matters

Milind Soman's remarkable achievement at the age of 60 not only showcases the potential of human endurance but also serves as an inspiration for countless individuals. His story emphasizes the importance of consistency, discipline, and a balanced lifestyle in achieving one’s goals, regardless of age. Soman’s journey reminds us that anyone can overcome challenges with the right mindset and preparation.

What’s Next for Milind Soman?

As Soman continues to inspire others through his fitness journey, many are eager to see what challenges he will take on next. Known for pushing boundaries, Soman may set his sights on even more ambitious swims or endurance events in the future. With his dedication and experience, there is no telling what he might achieve next, encouraging others to embrace an active lifestyle and pursue their dreams, no matter their age.
