Coimbatore prepares for the 2026 elections, appointing nearly 17,000 polling officials and establishing robust monitoring systems. Discover what this means for voters.
GlipzoAs Tamil Nadu prepares for the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections, Coimbatore district is taking significant steps to ensure a smooth electoral process. Nearly 17,000 government officials have been appointed as polling personnel, according to District Election Officer and Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar. This comprehensive staffing initiative is aimed at managing the voting process effectively across the district.
With the Model Code of Conduct now active, the district is entering a crucial phase of election preparation. The precise number of polling personnel appointed is 16,992, which includes a 20% reserve to manage unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, an estimated 3,000 staff members will be on hand to assist, raising the overall number of personnel involved in election duties to over 20,000.
As of March 15, 2026, Coimbatore boasts a voting population of 27,14,676, comprising 13,08,898 men, 14,05,246 women, and 532 voters from the third gender. These figures reflect the diverse makeup of the electorate, underscoring the importance of inclusive representation in the upcoming elections.
In terms of voter preparedness, a total of 1,97,991 Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) have been printed and successfully delivered to voters' homes. This ensures that the electorate is equipped with the necessary identification to cast their votes.
To ensure adherence to the Model Code of Conduct, the district has established 90 flying squads and 90 static surveillance teams, with nine teams deployed in each Assembly constituency. Additionally, 10 video surveillance teams have been formed, one for each constituency, to monitor election activities and ensure transparency.
The district is well-prepared with voting technology, possessing 8,343 ballot units, 5,200 control units, and 5,572 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units. Such resources are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and fostering public confidence in the voting system.
Electoral roll management is a critical aspect of the election process. As of mid-March, the district has received 23,208 applications under Form 6, with 19,075 already processed. Similarly, under Form 6A, 34,662 applications were submitted, of which 34,298 have been resolved. For Form 8, 19,193 applications were received, with 15,177 of those completed.
Voter awareness is being prioritized, particularly regarding financial regulations during the election period. Citizens are reminded not to carry cash exceeding ₹50,000 without proper documentation. Cash exceeding this limit without valid records, as well as unaccounted goods, will be subject to seizure by the monitoring teams.
In an effort to address any electoral concerns swiftly, a District Grievance Committee has been formed at the Collectorate, led by Additional Collector Sanket Balwant Waghe. This committee will oversee the review and release of seized cash or materials after a thorough verification process.
A 24-hour control room has also been established at the Collectorate to handle complaints related to Model Code of Conduct violations. Voters can register their complaints via a toll-free number 1800-425-0086 or through the cVIGIL mobile application. The Collector has assured that all complaints lodged through these channels will be addressed within 100 minutes, demonstrating a commitment to responsive governance.
The thorough preparation in Coimbatore reflects a broader commitment to conducting free and fair elections in Tamil Nadu. The deployment of a large number of polling personnel and the establishment of monitoring mechanisms are vital for ensuring that voters can exercise their rights without hindrance.
As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on how effectively these systems operate and whether they can successfully mitigate any issues that arise during the voting process.
With the election date looming, it will be interesting to observe how the measures implemented in Coimbatore will influence voter turnout and the overall integrity of the electoral process. Stakeholders will be keenly watching the effectiveness of the monitoring teams and the responsiveness of the grievance mechanisms in real time.
As we move closer to the elections, voter engagement and adherence to the rules will play crucial roles in shaping the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. The commitment to transparency and accountability shown by the district officials will be vital in ensuring a successful electoral exercise on April 1, 2026.
