Major allegations against AAP MLA Ashok Prashar emerge, claiming a job scam involving overseas funds. Click to learn more about the unfolding scandal.
GlipzoIn a startling turn of events, Bikram Singh Majithia, a senior leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and former minister, has made serious allegations against Ashok Prashar, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA representing Ludhiana Central. Majithia claims that Prashar orchestrated a scheme to collect money from individuals in Canada, promising them jobs within the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation. This revelation came during a press conference held in Chandigarh on Monday.
Accompanying Majithia was Nikhil Sabharwal, Prashar’s former personal assistant, who alleged that he was used as a front for this purported scam. Majithia has called for an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into these serious claims, suggesting that this could be a significant political scandal.
At the press conference, Majithia disclosed that Prashar’s assistant allegedly collected ₹1.10 crore from 87 individuals who were promised jobs, alongside 39 others who were to be hired as clerical staff. He further claimed that fake lists were prepared to deceive the candidates into believing their appointments were guaranteed. Majithia accused Prashar of instructing Sabharwal to flee the city amid growing scrutiny, warning him that he could be harmed if he remained.
Majithia's claims were bolstered by alleged financial transactions that he detailed: - March 8, 2024: Prashar allegedly facilitated a deposit of ₹90 lakh into Sabharwal's account from an overseas source in Canada. - On the same day, ₹40 lakh was transferred to the account of Prashar's wife, Meenu Prashar. - Following this, additional sums of ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh were also moved to Meenu's account. - On April 24, 2024, Harminder Singh Makkar, a building inspector in Ludhiana, purportedly deposited ₹30 lakh into Sabharwal's account, with subsequent transfers to Prashar’s account.
In response to these allegations, MLA Ashok Prashar categorically denied any wrongdoing, stating, “It’s all fake… all these allegations.” He asserted that Sabharwal was merely a worker and not his personal assistant, claiming that he was unaware of any fraudulent activities being conducted in his name. Prashar is set to hold a press conference to address the allegations further, indicating his intent to clear his name.
In a pointed remark, Prashar took a jab at Majithia, suggesting that he was attempting to revive his political career through these allegations. He referred to Majithia’s past incarceration, saying, “This man who ate ‘tari wali baingan’ in jail thinks he can revive his political career by addressing such press conferences.”
Majithia did not hold back in his accusations, stating that Prashar had been in collusion with government officials, specifically citing his connections with Makkar, who allegedly received favorable treatment within the municipal system. Majithia claimed that Prashar advocated for Makkar’s transfer order to be revoked, demonstrating a close working relationship that could undermine the integrity of the municipal hiring process.
Sabharwal, for his part, shared that he had been working as Prashar's PA since 2022, earning ₹13,000 a month. He recounted that he was instructed to recruit individuals for the municipal jobs but became entangled in the scandal when the promised jobs did not materialize, leading to discontent among those who had paid.
“I have now learned that a police case has been registered against me after Majithia tweeted about the whole issue. I demand that the case be transferred from the Ludhiana police to a central agency,” Sabharwal stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
The allegations levied against Ashok Prashar could have significant repercussions for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, especially as the state approaches key elections. If proven true, this scandal might not only tarnish Prashar’s reputation but also impact the AAP’s standing among voters who are increasingly wary of corruption in politics.
The involvement of the Enforcement Directorate could escalate the investigation, potentially uncovering more extensive networks of corruption within the local government. As the political landscape in Punjab remains delicate, observers are keeping a close watch on how AAP responds to these allegations and whether any further evidence surfaces.
As the situation develops, several key aspects will be crucial to monitor: - The outcome of Prashar’s planned press conference and any new evidence presented. - The response from the Enforcement Directorate and whether they will initiate a formal investigation into the allegations. - Reactions from the public and political opponents, particularly how this might influence upcoming elections.
This unfolding story highlights the ongoing issues of transparency and integrity in Punjab’s political scene, making it a critical narrative to follow in the months ahead.
