In our view, this amounts to betrayal — joining hands with rivals to weaken the party." Vijayan defended Sudhakaran, asserting that he had not been sidelined and was still a respected figure within the CPI(M). He further explained that the party had recently implemented a rule that encourages leaders aged 75 or older to step aside, a guideline Sudhakaran seemed to resist.
“After the issue arose, I tried to contact him several times, but he did not respond,” Vijayan disclosed, implying that Sudhakaran might have felt he could no longer contribute effectively under the new norms.
The Chief Minister also addressed allegations from Govindan regarding denial of candidacy. Vijayan reiterated that the CPI(M) follows a structured process for candidate selection, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established party protocols.
When questioned about the decision to field P.K. Shyamala, who is the wife of CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan, from Taliparamba, Vijayan defended her selection by highlighting her political qualifications. He stated, "When a woman candidate was considered for Taliparamba, her name came up first. It was not because she is M.V. Govindan’s wife. She has her own identity."
On the topic of shifting K.K. Shylaja, a former Health Minister, from Mattanur to Peravoor, Vijayan expressed confidence in retaining the seat in Mattanur, suggesting it was a strategic move based on the party's assessment of the electoral landscape.
Addressing concerns about Shylaja's popularity and potential as a future Chief Minister, he remarked, "The CPI(M) decides on the Chief Minister only after the results. Vijayan was also asked about allegations of favoritism towards P.A. Mohamed Riyas, his son-in-law and the current PWD Minister. He firmly rejected any claims of bias, asserting that ministerial responsibilities within the LDF are determined collectively. “He has achieved his position through his political work, not due to personal relations,” he stated, reinforcing a commitment to meritocracy within the party.
When discussing his absence from a national highway inauguration in Kochi, Vijayan clarified that the state government maintained regular communication with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding highway developments. He explained that scheduling conflicts had led to his absence, and he preferred not to engage in the political controversy surrounding the event.
In response to recent corruption allegations involving his daughter, T. Veena, Vijayan denounced these claims as politically motivated attacks aimed at undermining him. “These are attempts to target me. Similar allegations were raised in the previous election as well.
