Haryana's Rajya Sabha elections reveal Congress' internal strife, raising concerns about party discipline amidst a narrow victory. What happens next?
GlipzoThe Congress party, which boasts 37 MLAs in the Haryana Assembly, was left reeling when Boudh only secured 28 votes, winning by a narrow margin of just one vote. This close finish has sparked concerns about the party's cohesion as factionalism within its ranks appears to be resurfacing. The party's in-charge for Haryana, B.K. Hariprasad, confirmed the cross-voting and announced disciplinary actions against the involved MLAs: Shalley Chaudhary, Mohammad Ilyas, Mohammad Israil, and Renu Bala.
Political analysts are calling this incident a significant lesson for Congress. Kushal Pal, a political science professor at Indira Gandhi National College, emphasized, "The Congress had more than sufficient numbers to easily win the one seat, yet the victory was a very close finish. The indiscipline, possibly triggered by factionalism in the party’s state unit, has again come to the fore." He further stated that the central leadership needs to assert more control over state-level factions to avoid similar embarrassments in the future.
During a budget session of the State Assembly, Saini remarked, "The issue of Rajya Sabha election did not formally arise for discussion in the House. However, senior Congress member Raghubir Singh Kadian had questioned the necessity of fielding a third candidate." He clarified that the independent candidate in question sought support from Congress as well, asserting that in a democracy, individuals have the right to contest elections.
As Congress looks ahead, it must address these internal conflicts to avoid jeopardizing future electoral chances. The party's central leadership is likely to reevaluate its strategies to strengthen control over state units and foster greater unity among its legislators.
