Harry and Meghan's recent Australia visit lacked public interest, raising questions about their future engagements. What does this mean for the Sussexes?
GlipzoDuring their last visit in 2018, the couple was met with enthusiastic crowds, with tens of thousands of Australians flocking to see them during a nine-day royal tour. Yet, upon their return, it became evident that public interest had waned significantly. Many Australians expressed either a lack of awareness about the couple's visit or indifference toward their presence.
Giselle Bastin, an associate professor at Flinders University, provided insight into the couple's approach to their visit. She remarked, "If they think it’s gone well, it’s because nothing has gone wrong. They didn’t turn up at great big advertised opportunities to see them, at least not in the form of walkabouts… It has been very carefully controlled."
Describing the encounter, Haywood shared, "He just said, 'Oh my gosh' and then he gave me a big hug. It was beautiful. He went through each time he'd met her, and he reminded me of one of the times when it was pouring with rain. He remembered it vividly."
Meghan also showcased her empathetic side during their engagements, including heartfelt conversations with survivors of the Bondi Beach attack and sharing moments with children about beloved Australian literature.
Mental health emerged as a significant theme throughout their engagements. Prince Harry passionately addressed the challenges of mental health in the context of his royal life and the loss of his mother, Princess Diana. Meghan, too, opened up about her experiences with online trolling, stating she had been “the most trolled person in the world” for a decade. Such candid discussions underscore their commitment to mental health awareness, a cause they have championed for years.
Their recent visit to Australia was not just about public appearances; it was also a chance to explore potential partnerships and opportunities, particularly in light of their recent contract terminations with Spotify and Netflix. However, the lines between paid engagements and personal appearances during their tour sometimes appeared blurred, raising questions about the nature of their commitments.
Moving forward, it will be crucial to watch how they continue to redefine their roles and establish their identities beyond the confines of royal expectations. Will they succeed in fostering a strong connection with their audience, or will public interest continue to wane? Only time will tell. Engagements focusing on mental health, community-building, and cultural awareness will be vital as they navigate this new landscape.
