Gurindervir Singh shatters India's 100m record, clocking 10.09 seconds. Discover his journey from doubt to triumph and what’s next for Indian athletics.
GlipzoGurindervir Singh, a 25-year-old sprinter from Punjab, has made history by smashing the men’s 100m national athletics record during the Federation Cup held in Ranchi on Saturday. His remarkable finish time of 10.09 seconds not only secured him the title but also made him the first Indian athlete to complete the race in under 10.10 seconds. This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone in Indian athletics and ignites hopes for future international competitions.
Gurindervir's impressive performance came just a day after he initially broke the record in the semifinals, clocking 10.17 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 10.18 seconds held by Animesh Kujur. However, Kujur retaliated in the second semifinal with a faster time of 10.15 seconds, leading to an exhilarating competition between the two sprinters.
The recent feats of Gurindervir and Animesh have significantly raised expectations for India's performance in major upcoming events, including the Commonwealth Games in Scotland starting on July 23 and the Asian Games in Japan from September 19. Gurindervir’s remarkable 10.09 seconds would have earned him a silver medal at the last Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham in 2022, showcasing the potential for greater achievements in the near future.
As he crossed the finish line at the Birsa Munda Stadium, the atmosphere was electric. Coach James Hillier kept a close watch on the timing screen, and when the digits displayed 10.09 seconds, the crowd erupted in cheers. After the race, Gurindervir turned to the cameras, displaying a message written on the back of his bib: “Task is not finished yet. 10.10. Wait. I am still standing.” This statement was a clear nod to his detractors on social media and a personal reminder of his commitment to excellence.
In a post-race interview, Gurindervir addressed the critics who doubted his potential, especially regarding the 100m sprint. He shared, “People say a lot of things on social media. This message was to remind myself that I am here to perform and improve. Since I started running the 100m at the age of six or seven, I constantly faced skepticism. Many suggested I switch to the 400m or other events, claiming Indians don’t have the genes for short sprints. My goal has always been to prove them wrong.”
Coach Hillier praised Gurindervir’s performance, emphasizing the importance of executing their training plan. He had encouraged Gurindervir to remain focused and calm in the wake of Kujur's record-breaking run. “I told him that if he executed what we practiced, he would break the national record, especially given the significance of the moment,” Hillier stated.
To keep Gurindervir grounded, Hillier advised him to refrain from social media for a day after Kujur reclaimed the record. This strategy aimed to minimize distractions and keep his mind clear ahead of the final race.
Gurindervir's journey has not been without sacrifice. His father, Kamaljeet Singh, a retired Punjab Police constable, spoke about his son’s dedication. “Guri never shied away from training in any weather conditions—be it summer, winter, or rain. He is now reaping the rewards of his hard work,” Kamaljeet said proudly from their home in Patial village, located about 30 km from Jalandhar.
This isn’t the first instance Gurindervir has rewritten the national record. He initially set the record in March 2022 at the Indian Grand Prix with a time of 10.20 seconds. However, following that achievement, he struggled to break the 10.30-second barrier for the remainder of the season.
Coach Hillier is optimistic that this time will be different. “Last time, when he set the national record, his mental conditioning was not prepared for such a sudden success. He found it challenging to cope with the pressure. Now, I am confident he will manage the expectations and continue to improve,” Hillier asserted.
Although Gurindervir's clock stopped at 10.09 seconds, the implications for the future of men’s sprinting in India are profound. The clock is ticking, and the athletes are gearing up for the international stage. As they prepare for the Commonwealth and Asian Games, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Gurindervir and his competitors continue to evolve and push the limits of Indian athletics.
In conclusion, Gurindervir Singh’s triumph is not just a personal achievement; it symbolizes a breakthrough for Indian sprinting on the global stage. With determination, hard work, and the right mindset, the barriers that once seemed insurmountable are now within reach. As he sets his sights on further records and potential medals, the world will surely be watching as he races toward greatness.
