Neetu Kapoor's 'Daadi Ki Shaadi' opens to disappointing box office returns, earning only Rs 60 lakh on Day 1. Can it recover in the coming days?
GlipzoThis Friday heralded Neetu Kapoor's long-awaited return to cinema with the release of her new comedy film, Daadi Ki Shaadi. After a four-year hiatus, Kapoor stars alongside popular comedian and actor Kapil Sharma, as well as her daughter Ridhima Kapoor, who is making her film debut. Despite the high anticipation and a star-studded cast, the film's performance at the box office has been notably disappointing.
According to data from the industry tracker Sacnilk, Daadi Ki Shaadi raked in only Rs 60 lakh in net collections on its opening day, with a gross total of Rs 72 lakh. This figure is significantly below expectations and does not reach the coveted Rs 1 crore mark.
The film was screened across 1,789 shows on its premiere day, but struggled to attract audiences, achieving an overall Hindi occupancy rate of just 12.99%. The occupancy rates fluctuated throughout the day, starting with a modest 4.23% for morning shows, rising to 12.69% in the afternoons, peaking at 16.31% in the evening, before tapering off to 13.77% during the night screenings.
Regionally, Delhi NCR had the highest number of screenings, with 307 shows, but the film could only manage an occupancy of 8.5%. In Mumbai, which featured 92 shows, the performance was slightly better at 12.5% occupancy.
The box office figures stand in stark contrast to last week's release, Ek Din, produced by Aamir Khan and starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, which opened to a much more promising Rs 1 crore.
Historically, Kapil Sharma's films have performed significantly better. His last release, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, garnered Rs 1.85 crore on its opening day. While Daadi Ki Shaadi outperformed his indie feature Zwigato, which managed Rs 43 lakh, it still fell short compared to his 2017 period film Firangi, which opened at Rs 2.10 crore. Neetu Kapoor's last outing in Jug Jugg Jeeyo saw a much stronger opening of Rs 9.28 crore, further highlighting the current film's struggles.
As the weekend unfolds, Daadi Ki Shaadi faces intense competition from older films like Raja Shivaji, Bhoot Bangla, and Dhurandhar: The Revenge, all of which continue to attract viewers. This competition could further undermine the film's chances of recovering its opening weekend losses.
With such lackluster initial numbers, the critical question remains: can Daadi Ki Shaadi gain momentum in the coming days? The film's future seems uncertain as it now contends with not just established films but also audience expectations shaped by its talented cast. The filmmakers and stakeholders will be keenly watching box office trends to gauge if word-of-mouth and audience reception can bolster its performance.
The disappointing opening of Daadi Ki Shaadi is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it underscores the unpredictable nature of box office performances, particularly when high-profile stars are involved. Secondly, it raises questions about audience engagement and preferences in a post-pandemic landscape where viewers are selective about what they choose to watch. Lastly, it serves as a critical reminder for filmmakers and producers about the importance of marketing and audience connection in ensuring a film's success.
As the days progress, it will be interesting to see if Daadi Ki Shaadi can turn things around or if it will fade into the background amidst stronger contenders. The cinematic landscape is ever-evolving, and the audience's response will ultimately determine the fate of this much-anticipated release.
Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to track the film's performance over the weekend and beyond.
