Mohali residents are enduring a 36-hour power outage post-storm, raising concerns about safety and inadequate response from utility services. Click to learn more!
GlipzoIn Mohali, the aftermath of a devastating storm has left residents grappling with a dire situation as over 36 hours have passed without electricity. As of Monday evening, multiple areas continue to struggle with outages following the storm that wreaked havoc on power lines and uprooted utility poles on Sunday. This prolonged power disruption has not only affected the daily lives of citizens but has also severely hampered water distribution services across the city.
Affected neighborhoods include Phase 2, 3B1, 3B2, 4, 5, Phase 7, Sector 71, and Shahimajra village, where broken poles and tangled wires still litter the streets, creating dangerous conditions and impeding restoration efforts.
The power outage situation has been exacerbated by an ongoing strike among electricity department employees. Reports indicate that only four linemen are currently available to manage the city's power supply, leaving many areas in darkness. To make matters worse, officials including the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) and Junior Engineer (JE) have had to intervene, hiring contractual labor to assist with restoration. However, these efforts are hampered by limited resources and widespread damage across the region.
Frustration among residents has reached a boiling point, leading many to gather at the electricity department's office to voice their grievances. Hardeep Baidwan, a resident of Sector 71, expressed his discontent, stating, “Neither are our calls being answered nor is any official reaching the spot.” Similarly, Ram Kumar from Shahimajra lamented, “Broken wires are lying in our area, but no one has come to inspect the situation so far.”
Despite some areas in Phase 5 experiencing a brief return of power, adjacent neighborhoods remain in the dark. Pradeep Pandhi, a resident in Phase 5, described the unreliable electricity, saying, “Even when electricity does come, it lasts only for 15-20 minutes and then goes off again.” After enduring a night without power, Pandhi's family was forced to seek refuge in a hotel, highlighting the critical nature of the situation. “...three power poles are lying uprooted in our neighborhood,” he added, underscoring the ongoing risk and disruption.
A similar plight is evident in Kharar and Zirakpur, where residents are also experiencing extended outages. Reports indicate that several transformers have failed, further complicating the restoration process. Even areas where power has been restored are experiencing voltage fluctuations that risk damaging household appliances.
Paramjit Singh Kahlon, a former municipal councillor, has raised alarms regarding the critical shortage of ground staff within the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL). He highlighted that despite an increasing consumer base, there has been no corresponding rise in the number of linemen or assistant linemen, leading to significant delays in repairing faults. Kahlon warned that the failure to maintain essential electricity services could be seen as an administrative failure, urging immediate action to deploy sufficient field staff and establish a dedicated emergency response mechanism.
The ongoing challenges have drawn attention to the need for systemic improvements in the city's power infrastructure and emergency preparedness.
As residents of Mohali continue to endure the effects of these outages, the situation remains fluid. The community is left to wonder about the next steps from local authorities and the PSPCL. With the storm's aftermath still affecting daily life, many are questioning whether sufficient resources will be allocated to restore power effectively and prevent future disruptions.
In light of this crisis, residents are encouraged to stay informed about restoration efforts and to actively engage with local officials to ensure their voices are heard. The necessity for improved communication and swift action has never been clearer as Mohali seeks to recover from this significant power outage.
Why It Matters: The prolonged outages not only disrupt daily life but also raise concerns about the reliability of infrastructure and emergency response systems in place, which are crucial for public safety and convenience.
Stay tuned for updates as this situation evolves and the community advocates for better services and responses from their utility providers.
