Cinematographer Rathnavelu discusses his artistic partnership with Sukumar, emphasizing visual storytelling ahead of the trailer launch for "Peddi" in Bhopal.
GlipzoIn a recent discussion ahead of the much-anticipated trailer launch of Peddi in Bhopal, renowned cinematographer Rathnavelu shared insights into his creative synergy with acclaimed director Sukumar. Rathnavelu emphasized that working under Sukumar's direction allows for a richer visual narrative, elevating the storytelling experience beyond mere dialogue.
Rathnavelu, who has previously collaborated with Sukumar on the blockbuster Rangasthalam, expressed his artistic philosophy regarding cinematography. He believes that emotions and social contexts can be more effectively communicated through visual elements rather than relying solely on spoken words. This approach is particularly vital in a landscape where dialogue often dominates the narrative.
During his conversation, Rathnavelu elaborated on his technique of utilizing framing and light to convey deeper meanings. He illustrated this with an example from Peddi: "Only one shot of straight hard light falling on his back to reveal his community. I don't want to emphasize, but I thought that is also a point because it's written in the story... The camera will follow the glass or pot or whatever. There is kind of we need to, as a cinematographer, I try to tell a story from a story point of view."
He pointed out the challenges faced by cinematographers, particularly in Indian cinema, where lengthy dialogues often limit visual exploration. Rathnavelu stated, "With Sukumar, I have that big advantage because he also tries to emphasize visually. There are a lot of 90% directors who try to say everything in dialogue. That is where cinematographers, especially Indian cinematographers, don't have the scope to deliver some extra visuals."
Rathnavelu’s remarks shed light on why his collaboration with Sukumar is particularly fruitful. The director's commitment to visual storytelling not only enriches the narrative but also allows cinematographers like Rathnavelu to explore creative avenues that would otherwise be overlooked. He described the intricate balance between dialogue and cinematography in South Indian films, noting, "Within so many dialogues, a cinematographer has to make the film look good, convey the tone, and convey the mood. It's a very tricky thing, actually, I feel, especially South Indian cinema. The dialogue is so big."
This emphasis on visuals aligns with current trends in filmmaking, where audiences increasingly appreciate the subtleties of visual expression. As cinema evolves, the role of cinematographers becomes even more critical in delivering compelling stories that resonate with viewers on multiple levels.
The excitement surrounding Peddi is palpable, particularly as Rathnavelu and Sukumar prepare for the trailer launch. The film also marks a reunion between Sukumar and actor Ram Charan, following their successful partnership in Rangasthalam, which has left a significant mark on Telugu cinema.
In addition to Peddi, Sukumar's future projects, notably Pushpa 3: The Rampage, are already generating buzz among fans. The previous installments of the Pushpa series have set high expectations, and audiences are eager to see how Sukumar continues to innovate within the genre.
The discussion around Rathnavelu’s work with Sukumar is crucial not just for film enthusiasts but also for aspiring filmmakers and cinematographers. It underlines the importance of visual storytelling in cinema, suggesting that a well-executed visual narrative can often speak louder than words. This perspective invites a reevaluation of traditional approaches to filmmaking, especially in an industry where dialogue has traditionally held sway.
As the trailer for Peddi approaches its release, audiences will be watching closely to see how Rathnavelu’s cinematography complements Sukumar’s vision. This collaboration could very well set a new standard for visual storytelling in Indian cinema, showcasing how powerful imagery can effectively convey complex social themes and emotions.
As Peddi gears up for its launch, industry watchers will be keen to observe how Rathnavelu’s unique visual style influences audience reception. With Sukumar’s track record and Rathnavelu’s innovative techniques, this partnership may usher in a new era of storytelling that balances dialogue with breathtaking visuals. Future projects, particularly Pushpa 3, will likely continue to explore and expand these themes, keeping audiences engaged and eager for what’s next.
Stay tuned for the trailer launch in Bhopal and the unfolding of Rathnavelu and Sukumar's creative journey in Peddi.
