Deepa Mehta's critically acclaimed film Water recently marked its 20th anniversary, a significant milestone for both the film and its cast, particularly Lisa Ray, who portrayed the lead character, Kalyani. The film, which also featured John Abraham, explores the life of a widow in colonial India, addressing deep-rooted societal issues. In a recent interview, Ray shared her reflections on the film’s legacy and the unique experience of working with Mehta.
Ray, fondly remembered for her portrayal of the fragile widow, Kalyani, spoke about the profound impact the role had on her career. "Kalyani is by far one of the most beloved characters I’ve had the opportunity to create," she recalled. When Mehta first approached her with the script while she was attending drama school in London, Ray felt an immediate connection to the role. "Once she entrusted me with Kalyani, I realized that I could not simply act my way into her being; I had to become Kalyani," she explained.
To prepare for the role, Ray dedicated months to understanding Kalyani’s character. She engaged in intensive workshops, focusing on the character's physicality and emotional depth. This preparation included a visit to Vrindavan, a pivotal location in the film, to immerse herself in the cultural context. Once filming commenced in Sri Lanka, Ray committed to fully embodying Kalyani by wearing a simple cotton sari throughout the shoot. This level of dedication allowed her to discover the essence of Kalyani that lay within her.
Reflecting on her initial surprise at being cast in such a traditional role, Ray expressed gratitude towards Mehta for her vision. "No one could imagine I would do justice to such a traditional Indian character, but Deepa saw something in me before I recognized it fully myself," she noted. This mutual respect and understanding between the actress and director contributed to their powerful collaboration.
When asked about her relationship with Mehta, Ray emphasized that it transcends the typical director-actor dynamic. "Deepa and I have a special bond that goes beyond the usual professional boundaries," she stated. She highlighted her preference for surrendering to the director's vision, indicating that she finds comfort in trusting Mehta’s creative instincts.
Ray’s collaboration with Mehta extends beyond Water. Reflecting on her experiences with the director, she noted, "I don’t see it in terms of gender; it’s about the person. Deepa has a unique perspective that enriches the storytelling process."
As Ray continues to navigate her professional and personal life, she remains an advocate for women's health, particularly in the realm of menopause. "I am an advocate for hormonal wellness in menopausal women. After suffering silently, we need to talk about menopause as a transition into a woman's wisdom during her prime years," she stated passionately.
Ray co-founded NuHer, a platform dedicated to providing support and solutions for women experiencing midlife challenges. She emphasized the need for women in India to have access to resources like hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Ray balances her advocacy work with her role as a mother and wife, stating, "I am busier than ever, but I am committed to doing what I believe in, including health awareness talks and occasional projects like Four More Shots Please."
Despite her busy schedule, Ray maintains a strong connection to her Indian roots. She frequently visits India and cherishes her family ties, stating, "Of course, I’m Indian in every way. However, in midlife, I have stopped seeking validation. That’s what makes midlife women both powerful and threatening to society. We are accomplished and have nothing to prove."
Ray currently resides in Goa, living a life of gratitude and serenity with her family. This peaceful existence allows her to reflect on her journey, both as an actress and an advocate for women’s health.
In conclusion, the 20th anniversary of Water serves as a reminder of the film’s cultural significance and the remarkable journey of Lisa Ray as an actress and advocate. Her heartfelt reflections on Kalyani and her collaboration with Deepa Mehta underscore the lasting impact of this iconic film on Indian cinema and society. Ray’s dedication to women's health and empowerment continues to inspire, proving that her influence extends far beyond the silver screen.
