CM Vijay grants special permission for 9 am screenings of Karuppu, sparking excitement in Tamil cinema. What does this mean for the industry?
GlipzoIn a bold and decisive move, Vijay, recently sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has already begun reshaping the state's film industry landscape. Just two days into his new role, he has approved special permissions for early morning screenings of the highly anticipated movie Karuppu, starring renowned actors Suriya and Trisha. This decision has generated excitement among fans and the film community alike, creating a buzz that extends beyond the cinema halls.
On Tuesday, Kamal Haasan, another titan of Tamil cinema, praised Vijay for his initial actions, including the closure of 717 liquor outlets across the state. This move aligns with Vijay's broader vision for a more responsible governance model, especially regarding public safety and welfare. But the granting of early morning shows for Karuppu signifies a keen interest in revitalizing the film industry, which had faced restrictions in recent years.
The announcement regarding the 9 AM shows was shared via the official X handle of Dream Warrior Pictures, the production house behind Karuppu, which expressed gratitude to Vijay for his support. The tweet read:
> “Special thanks to our honorable Chief Minister Thiru. Joseph Vijay for granting the special permission for the 9 AM shows of #Karuppu. FDFS begins at 9 AM, from May 14.”
This decision comes at a time when advance ticket sales for Karuppu have already exceeded Rs 4.45 crore, indicating a robust public interest. The film is set for release on May 14, and with the added allure of early morning screenings, it is expected to draw even more viewers.
Karuppu features Suriya in the titular role of Karuppuswamy, while Trisha plays a rival lawyer, marking a reunion between the two stars after 21 years. Their last collaboration was in the action film Aaru in 2005, making this film a significant event for fans of Tamil cinema.
While morning screenings are commonplace in many other Indian states, Tamil Nadu has historically imposed restrictions on such shows to manage the enormous fan following of its film stars. The government’s crackdown on early morning shows, especially the controversial 4 AM screenings, followed tragic incidents during the Pongal festival in 2023, which highlighted the potential chaos surrounding movie releases.
On that occasion, the release of two major films—Thunivu and Varisu—led to chaos, resulting in a tragic loss of life. In response to this, the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government imposed regulations that limited screenings to 9 AM or later unless special permission was granted. This policy effectively restricted films featuring superstar actors to a maximum of four weekday shows and five on weekends.
Under Vijay's leadership, there appears to be a shift in policy as he and his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, have started to relax these restrictions. Previous exceptions had been made for films such as Kanguva and Leo, although the latter saw its early morning screenings revoked shortly after release due to safety concerns. The production house Silver Screen Studios had even sought legal intervention from the Madras High Court to challenge this decision but faced continued pushback from the state government.
The quick approval for Karuppu's early morning shows signals a more favorable environment for filmmakers in Tamil Nadu, especially those associated with prominent stars.
Fans are not only excited about the film but are also abuzz with rumors surrounding the relationship between Trisha and Vijay. Their friendship has been under scrutiny, particularly following revelations of Vijay's marital issues. His wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, recently filed for divorce, citing allegations of an adulterous relationship with Trisha after the two were spotted together at a wedding.
Despite the swirling rumors, both Vijay and Trisha have publicly maintained that they are merely friends. Their long-standing partnership in films has made them one of Tamil cinema's most beloved pairs, dating back to their first project together, Ghilli in 2004.
As the film industry in Tamil Nadu begins to recover from years of restrictions, the granting of early morning shows for Karuppu could set a precedent for future releases. This decision not only highlights Vijay's commitment to supporting the entertainment sector but also reflects a broader shift towards a more lenient regulatory framework. Fans can expect more cinematic experiences in the coming months as the state appears to embrace a more vibrant film culture.
As we approach the release date of May 14, all eyes will be on how Karuppu performs at the box office, as well as any further policy changes that might emerge under Vijay's administration. The film's success could pave the way for similar projects to benefit from relaxed restrictions, potentially revitalizing the Tamil film industry in the process.
