Five people arrested after assault on TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur. Investigations ongoing amidst political tensions between TMC and BJP.
GlipzoIn a shocking turn of events, seven individuals have been apprehended by the West Bengal police in relation to the brutal assault on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. The incident took place on Saturday evening in Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district, during Banerjee's visit to the family of a deceased TMC worker, who allegedly lost his life in post-poll violence.
According to senior police officials, a suo motu case was initiated following the incident, prompting the Sonarpur police to establish three specialized teams. These teams conducted overnight raids across the area to apprehend suspects identified from circulating video evidence on social media.
“Five individuals have been formally arrested and taken into custody, while two more are being detained for further questioning. Active raids are ongoing as we meticulously analyze all available video footage,” a senior police officer stated, highlighting the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The arrested suspects, identified by police sources, include Nirmala Sengupta, Debasish Dutta, Kajol Das, and Akash Gayen, a local youth. These individuals are set to appear before the Baruipur court later on Sunday.
The assault occurred as Banerjee's convoy approached the residence of the deceased TMC worker. Demonstrators met him with aggressive chants of “go back” and waved black flags. Faced with a narrow access road, Banerjee opted to switch to a motorcycle to reach the family home. However, he was soon surrounded by a hostile crowd, who allegedly pulled him off the motorcycle, shouted “chor, chor” (thief), and hurled various objects at him, including bricks, shoes, and eggs. Notably, several women in the crowd wielded brooms as part of the protest.
The situation escalated quickly, requiring intervention from state police and central forces to ensure Banerjee's safety and rescue him from the mob. Following his extraction, he was swiftly transported to a nearby private hospital and was later transferred to another facility. After undergoing assessment and treatment, he was discharged around 11 PM that same evening, safe but shaken by the ordeal.
The TMC, along with Banerjee himself, has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating this attack, alleging that it was a premeditated act. In response, the BJP has distanced itself from the incident, claiming it was a spontaneous public reaction rather than a politically motivated assault.
The political ramifications of this incident are already unfolding. Mamata Banerjee, the former chief minister of West Bengal and a prominent TMC leader, has accused the BJP of exerting pressure on hospitals to prevent the admission of Abhishek Banerjee. Conversely, BJP representatives have suggested that Banerjee may have sought hospitalization to evade a CID summons concerning an ongoing investigation into a signature forgery case in West Bengal, set for Monday.
This clash highlights the intense political rivalry in West Bengal, where tensions between the TMC and BJP have escalated in recent years. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among TMC supporters and raised questions about the safety of political figures in the region.
The assault on Abhishek Banerjee is not just a reflection of rising political tensions; it underscores the deteriorating state of political discourse in West Bengal. As the state's political climate becomes increasingly charged, incidents like this threaten the very fabric of democratic engagement.
As the investigation unfolds, all eyes will be on the Baruipur court as the arrested suspects are presented. The outcome of the legal proceedings could set a precedent regarding political violence and the accountability of political actors in West Bengal. Moreover, political parties will likely continue to leverage this incident for their narratives, further polarizing the electorate as upcoming elections approach.
In the coming weeks, it will be crucial to monitor the responses from both the TMC and BJP, as well as any developments in the CID case against Banerjee. The situation remains fluid, and how it evolves could significantly influence the political landscape in West Bengal going forward.
