The Colorado Avalanche clinch the Central Division title and secure the top seed in the Western Conference, eyeing a path to the Stanley Cup.
GlipzoIn a thrilling matchup on Tuesday night, the Colorado Avalanche solidified their dominance in the NHL by defeating the St. Louis Blues 3-1, thereby clinching the Central Division title and securing the top seed in the Western Conference. While this achievement is noteworthy, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar remains focused on the ultimate goal: winning the Stanley Cup.
Coach Bednar expressed his determination to maintain momentum saying, "We’re not all the way there yet. The goal for us started with winning the division, the conference. We still need another win to get first overall. Like, we’d be crazy not to chase that at this point, right? It’s important to try and get your home ice, especially after a season like this."
This marks the third occasion in five seasons that the Avalanche have clinched the top spot in the conference, and the first time since 2023. In the previous playoff run, the team suffered an early exit in the first round. However, the Avalanche showcased their resilience in 2022 when they captured their third Stanley Cup after finishing first in the Western Conference.
Goaltender Scott Wedgewood shared his thoughts on the season’s trajectory during the postgame analysis on Altitude TV. He remarked, "Obviously, this was a goal at the start of the year, to make the playoffs and then see where you seed. For the most part, we’ve led the entire league all year."
The Avalanche have accumulated an impressive record of 51 wins, 16 losses, and 10 overtime losses, totaling 112 points. Interestingly, they have fared even better on the road with a record of 27-7-5 compared to their home performance of 24-9-5. Wedgewood emphasized the critical advantage of securing home ice during the playoffs, stating, "Just atmosphere, altitude... you’re in your own bed the night before. You know, you’ve still got to perform. It doesn’t mean you win because you’re at home, but like I said in between rounds, you’re able to knock a team out in five or six, you’re home for that many more days."
In addition to clinching the Central Division, the Avalanche are on the verge of securing the President’s Trophy, which is awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. This would grant them home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, a factor that can prove pivotal in a tightly contested postseason.
Wedgewood elaborated on the significance of home ice, noting, "Then, obviously, the fans, you get them going with a couple of hits, playoff hockey’s intense, and it’ll play in your favor."
Bednar has called for consistency in the team's performance as they approach the final five games of the regular season. The coach acknowledged that the team has experienced fluctuations in form lately, stating, "We’ve proven that we can do it when we want to set our minds to it, which is really important. I don’t have to see it for 60 minutes for every game the rest of the way, but we need to see it enough to secure our goal and making sure everyone’s confident in the way we play."
Wedgewood expressed optimism about the team’s potential, highlighting the collective spirit among players. "It’s a great group, a hungry group. And it’s obviously fun to be part of that room and keep hearing music at the end of every game."
As the Avalanche gear up for the final stretch of the regular season, all eyes will be on their performance as they aim to bolster their playoff positioning and strive for another Stanley Cup. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Avalanche can maintain their momentum and consistency to secure their aspirations for the postseason.
The Avalanche’s recent success is more than just a statistic; it signifies a well-rounded team that is poised for a deep playoff run. With the potential to claim the President’s Trophy, the Avalanche have a unique opportunity to leverage home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, which could prove crucial in their quest for another championship. As they navigate the final games, maintaining their focus and performance will be key to achieving their ultimate goal.
Moving forward, fans should keep an eye on the Avalanche’s upcoming games as they aim to solidify their playoff positioning. The coaching staff will likely emphasize the need for consistent performances to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead in the postseason. With the stakes high and the team’s determination evident, the Avalanche are set to make a significant impact in the 2023 NHL playoffs.
The race for the Stanley Cup is heating up, and the Avalanche are gearing up to be one of the frontrunners in the hunt for hockey’s most coveted trophy.
