Ashutosh Gowariker reveals the freedom of acting today, embracing new roles and opportunities in his evolving career. Discover his journey and insights.
GlipzoAshutosh Gowariker, the acclaimed director behind cinematic masterpieces like Lagaan (2001) and Swades (2004), is experiencing a liberating phase in his career. After transitioning from acting to directing and then back to acting, he feels a refreshing sense of freedom that he hasn't felt in years. In a recent exclusive interview with SCREEN, Gowariker shared his thoughts on the evolving landscape of cinema and how it has affected his approach to both acting and directing.
Gowariker’s journey in the film industry began when he made his acting debut alongside Aamir Khan in Holi (1984) and later starred with Shah Rukh Khan in the television series Circus (1989). Reflecting on his earlier years, he remarked, "When I was younger, there was always pressure to fit the mold of the ideal hero. Today, it’s liberating. You don’t have to worry about your hairstyle. I love it now.” His revelation underscores a broader shift in the industry where authenticity is celebrated over traditional stereotypes.
Gowariker’s career has seen its share of peaks and valleys. After directing Lagaan, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, he followed up with other successes like Jodhaa Akbar (2008). However, not all ventures have been as successful. Films like What’s Your Raashee? (2009) and Mohenjo Daro (2016) didn’t perform as expected at the box office, leading to a challenging period in his directing career.
Despite these setbacks, Gowariker returned to acting with Ventilator (2016), a critically acclaimed Marathi film that won a National Award. He expressed his longing to act, stating, "When you’re directing a film, it’s such a demanding task that you can’t focus on anything else. I always wanted to act, but I never had the time.” His return marked a significant shift, allowing him to explore roles that he finds intriguing.
After his stint with Ventilator, Gowariker directed Panipat, which faced another box office disappointment. However, he didn’t rush back into directing and instead embraced acting opportunities. His latest role in Kaala Paani, released on Netflix India, showcases his versatility, as he experiments with different genres and formats. He has also been busy with other projects, including the Hindi film System on Prime Video India.
His involvement in System came about unexpectedly when he ran into fellow filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. "She said, ‘Hey, Ashu sir! I want to cast you in my movie!’ I said, ‘Done, I’m doing,’” recalled Gowariker. This spontaneous decision led him to play a lawyer known as the 'fox' in the legal circles, highlighting how chance encounters can lead to exciting new directions in one’s career.
Gowariker's current approach reflects a willingness to embrace diverse opportunities within the film industry. He emphasized the importance of exploring various avenues, stating, “I was always shying away from web series, the documentary genre, and producing for other directors. I’m doing all of that now.” This marks a significant shift in his career, as he navigates different roles and responsibilities in filmmaking.
His latest project, a docuseries titled Temple Raiders, is just one of the many initiatives he is undertaking. He believes that every opportunity, whether acting, directing, or producing, adds to his experience and contributes to his growth as an artist.
Gowariker's journey reflects a larger transformation within the film industry, where traditional norms are being challenged. The pressure to conform to conventional standards of beauty and heroism is diminishing, paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse representation on screen. His insights serve as a reminder that creativity flourishes when artists are allowed to be their authentic selves.
As Gowariker continues to balance acting and directing, the film community is eager to see how his experiences will shape future projects. His openness to new genres and formats may inspire other filmmakers to break away from the constraints of traditional storytelling, leading to a more dynamic cinematic landscape.
As of now, Gowariker has not announced his next major directorial endeavor, but he remains active in various projects. Fans and industry insiders alike are keen to see where his next steps will lead him. Will he return to directing epic films, or will he continue to explore roles that challenge the norms?
With his rich background and evolving perspective, Ashutosh Gowariker is poised to make significant contributions to the world of cinema. For those who admire his work, the future looks bright as he continues to redefine his path and inspire others along the way.
