Discover how Arjun Krish and Ria Dinesh won Best Telefilm at Kerala State Television Awards with their impactful film, F for Freedom. Click to learn more!
GlipzoIn a surprising turn of events, Arjun Krish, a former civil services aspirant, and Ria Dinesh, a dedicated homemaker, have made headlines by clinching the prestigious award for Best Telefilm at the 33rd Kerala State Television Awards. Their winning short film, titled F for Freedom, is not just a cinematic endeavor; it’s a heartfelt exploration of family dynamics that resonates with many.
The duo’s journey began at a filmmaking workshop led by renowned actor-director Soumya Sadanandan in 2021. During a collaborative exercise, Arjun and Ria found common ground and decided to create a short film together. Their initial concept revolved around a dysfunctional family grappling with individual struggles during a vacation. This concept evolved into the award-winning film, F for Freedom, which beautifully intertwines personal narratives and broader societal themes.
F for Freedom showcases the life of Gauri Shyama, a classical dancer-turned-homemaker, portrayed by Laya Simpson. The film delves into complex themes such as individuality, alienation, patriarchy, and sexuality. Through Gauri’s story, viewers are invited to reflect on the challenges faced by women in balancing personal aspirations with family responsibilities.
The film’s narrative is enriched by Ria's own experiences, as she too was a classical dancer who stepped away from her career after marriage at just 20 years old. “My children are still in awe of the fact that I made a short film,” Ria shares, highlighting the film's personal significance.
Despite their lack of industry connections, Arjun and Ria faced the challenge of assembling a suitable cast and crew head-on. They sought a young actress with a background in classical dance for the lead role and found Laya through social media. This serendipitous connection also led them to Sanju Sanichen, known for his role in Kerala Crime Files, who took on the role of Gauri's son. Much of the remaining cast consisted of their friends, showcasing their collaborative spirit.
The film also benefited from the talents of veteran dubbing artist Sreeja Ravi, who received the award for Best Dubbing Artist for her work on Gauri's character. “After she saw the first cut of the film, we asked for her input on casting. Her voice brought the character to life in a way that resonated with us,” Arjun explains, emphasizing their collective effort to produce a quality film.
Before diving into filmmaking, Arjun was a cinephile who unexpectedly discovered his passion for storytelling during the pandemic. After pursuing a post-graduation in engineering and attempting the UPSC exams, he found himself yearning for creative expression. “I realized that I enjoyed writing and direction, but I didn’t have the means to attend film school,” he recalls.
Ria, who currently resides in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, had her own journey into the world of cinema. Though she had previously scripted skits for her local socio-cultural organization, her desire to learn more about filmmaking led her to the workshop, where she felt like the oldest participant. “Even though I was older than most, my enthusiasm matched that of the younger attendees,” Ria reflected on her experience.
With the success of F for Freedom, Arjun and Ria view this achievement as just the beginning of their cinematic journey. They have established their own production company, 10Degree N Dreams Studio, aimed at nurturing and promoting emerging talent in the film industry. Arjun is currently collaborating with a production house's writers’ room, indicating his commitment to furthering his craft.
As they look to the future, both creators express excitement about potential new projects. Their desire to tell stories that resonate with audiences reflects a broader trend in contemporary cinema, where personal narratives and social themes are increasingly valued.
The success of F for Freedom is a testament to the power of storytelling and the importance of diverse voices in cinema. It highlights how individuals from different backgrounds can come together to create impactful art that speaks to universal experiences. As audiences increasingly seek authenticity in film, the work of creators like Arjun and Ria is essential in shaping the narratives that define modern cinema.
In conclusion, the journey of Arjun Krish and Ria Dinesh serves as an inspiration for aspiring filmmakers everywhere. Their story reminds us that passion, collaboration, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities can lead to remarkable achievements in the world of film.
As we await their upcoming projects, one thing is clear: the landscape of Indian cinema is evolving, and with it, new voices are emerging to tell stories that matter.
