Anurag Kashyap discusses his health crisis after Netflix canceled *Maximum City*, revealing the emotional turmoil and industry challenges he faced.
GlipzoFilmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared the distressing impact of his Netflix project, Maximum City, being canceled, which led to a heart attack and rehabilitation. Kashyap, known for his bold storytelling, had invested nearly two years into developing this series based on Suketu Mehta’s acclaimed book, Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found. Initially greenlit by Netflix, the project was unexpectedly shelved, leaving him in a state of emotional turmoil.
In a candid interview with Mid-Day India, Kashyap reflected on the lack of communication regarding the fate of the project. He revealed that during the COVID-19 lockdown, he was diligently writing the series, unaware that Netflix executives had already deemed it unfeasible after reviewing the first part. “They had already decided after reading part one that this cannot be made; it would be very difficult. But nobody had the courage to come and tell me,” he lamented.
His dedication to the project, coupled with the absence of transparency from Netflix, led to a profound emotional crisis. Kashyap expressed the gravity of investing so much time and energy only to face a sudden halt.
The cancellation's emotional fallout quickly translated into physical health issues for Kashyap. He suffered a heart attack, necessitating the insertion of a stent and the prescription of blood thinners. Compounding his health struggles, he experienced adverse reactions to vaccines, which led to severe asthma. In an effort to cope, he began drinking, further complicating his recovery.
“My daughter had a breakdown looking at me and asked me to go to rehab, so I went,” Kashyap shared. His time in rehabilitation was fraught with challenges, including a ligament injury that worsened due to a lack of timely medical intervention. Despite his struggles, he ultimately found himself in a better emotional space after the ordeal.
Despite the hardships he faced, Kashyap has found a sense of peace. He stated, “I am very happy now. I have in my mind forgiven everyone.” The filmmaker has relocated to Bengaluru and expressed his contentment with life away from Mumbai, indicating a desire to move past the trauma associated with the project.
Kashyap also discussed the evolving landscape of streaming services in India, noting how platforms like Netflix initially provided opportunities for independent filmmakers but have since shifted their focus. He mentioned a conversation with a senior executive from Silicon Valley, who referred to India as a “dumping ground,” indicating a focus on subscriber growth over quality content.
Kashyap's insights reflect a broader concern within the filmmaking community regarding the direction of streaming platforms. He emphasized that while there was once a robust space for innovative storytelling, the current climate prioritizes subscriber numbers over artistic integrity. This shift can have significant implications for filmmakers who rely on these platforms for distribution.
Anurag Kashyap’s experience with the cancellation of Maximum City serves as a powerful reminder of the emotional and physical toll that the entertainment industry can exert on creators. His journey through heartache and health crises underlines the importance of transparency and support in creative collaborations. As he continues to adapt and move forward, Kashyap's story stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of storytelling in the face of adversity.
