Alia Bhatt challenges the male-centric focus of Indian cinema at Cannes, advocating for gender-agnostic storytelling that includes women's voices.
GlipzoAlia Bhatt, the acclaimed Indian actress, made headlines once again during her second appearance at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on May 12, 2023. As the global ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, Bhatt took the opportunity to address a significant issue plaguing the film industry: the pervasive focus on male audiences at the expense of women’s narratives.
In an insightful conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Bhatt expressed her concerns regarding the long-standing assumption that the majority of filmgoers are male. She questioned why the industry's storytelling often prioritizes male perspectives, leaving women’s stories underrepresented.
Alia noted that the notion of catering exclusively to a male audience is outdated and limiting. She stated, "I often find myself wondering why conversations around cinema continue to revolve around making films for men instead of creating stories that connect with everyone."
The actress emphasized the importance of gender-agnostic storytelling, where the focus should be on the strength of the narrative rather than the gender of the audience. She highlighted the success of films like Barbie, Wuthering Heights, and The Devil Wears Prada, which have resonated with female viewers and achieved remarkable box office success.
Alia remarked on the current trend, saying, "When I look at the landscape, I think we’re in a very fascinating time today. If you look at the box office, you’ll see that films with female-centered narratives are becoming massive hits."
During her interview, Alia pointed out a common argument in Indian cinema: that 75% of moviegoers are male, which influences the type of films produced. She questioned the implications of this statistic for women, asking, "If we are catering just to the men, then what happens to the women? Why do we have to alienate anyone?"
She advocates for a balanced approach where storytelling transcends gender. "Whether it stars a man or a woman, that should not matter. It is the storytelling that should matter. I’m just hoping we have more of that," she expressed passionately.
Alia Bhatt also reflected on her previous appearance at Cannes, which she described as “chaotic.” She mentioned that she barely had time to soak in the ambiance before stepping onto the iconic red carpet. Now, as she returns in 2023, she feels a mix of pride and responsibility representing India on an international stage.
At this year’s festival, Alia made waves with her fashion choices. Her first appearance featured a stunning landscape-print ball gown by designer Yash Patil, followed by a custom haute couture gown from Tamara Ralph. To complement her blush-toned gown, she adorned herself with an exquisite necklace made of 168.27 carats of rare pink coral, styled by the talented Rhea Kapoor.
Looking ahead, Alia Bhatt is set to appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated film Love & War, alongside stars Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. Additionally, she has a spy thriller titled Alpha in her upcoming slate, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
Alia’s remarks shine a spotlight on a pivotal issue within the film industry—gender representation. Her call for more inclusive storytelling is more than just a personal stance; it reflects a broader societal shift towards recognizing the importance of diverse narratives in cinema. As audiences increasingly demand stories that resonate with all genders, filmmakers may find that a more balanced approach not only enriches the industry but also leads to greater commercial success.
As the industry evolves, it will be crucial to watch how filmmakers respond to this call for change. Will the focus shift towards more gender-inclusive storytelling? Only time will tell, but Alia Bhatt’s impactful statements are a step in the right direction for a more equitable cinematic landscape.
